Relive some of the 19 years of History .....Who will our 2016 winner be?

Big stars and young guns to compete at 2016 Aus3de

More than 100 entries have been received for the 2016 Aus3DE, Australia’s premier equestrian event, with an exceptional field of International competitors, Olympic athletes and a large number of young riders set to compete in the heart of Adelaide.

Bronze medal winners from the recent 2016 Rio Olympic Games will be among the line-up of contenders for the 2016 event, including 2000 Sydney Olympic Gold Medallist Stuart Tinney and 2008 Beijing Olympic Silver Medallist Shane Rose.

Former World Number One in Eventing and current Event Riders Masters winner, Oliver Townend from the UK will also be competing, as well as two New Zealand riders, Andrew Daines and Sam Felton. There are 17 entries in the Bates Saddles CCI2* Young Rider Championships, the largest number of recorded young riders in the event’s history.

Local rider and 2008 Silver Beijing Medallist, Megan Jones will be riding two horses in the new class, the RM Williams CIC3*, while South Australian rider and 1996 Atlanta Gold Medallist, now based in the UK, Wendy Schaeffer will be returning to Adelaide to compete in the RM Williams CIC3*.

Aus3DE Event Director Gillian Rolton said it is fantastic to see such a high calibre of riders, as well as many young riders competing in the event.

“The quality of entries across all the classes for the 2016 event is exceptionally high,” Gillian said. “We are also very pleased to see so many entries in the Bates Saddles CCI2* Young Rider Championships. These athletes are our next Olympians, so it’s important for events such as the Aus3DE to start them on their journey for Tokyo and beyond.”

“The line-up of horses and riders in this year’s Adelaide CCI4* is a very classy field,” she said. “This includes the big-names in the sport such as Rio Olympic Bronze Medallist and Sydney Olympic Gold Medallist Stuart Tinney, Rio Olympic Bronze Medallist and Beijing Olympic Silver Medallist Shane Rose, and New Zealand rider Andrew Daines who will be jumping the ditch to compete at Aus3de for the first time.”

Find out more about the Equestrian Australia Dual Crown

What is the Equestrian Australia Dual Crown?

The Equestrian Australia Dual Crown is a new National Series in Eventing and Jumping. Supported by the South Australian Tourism Commission, the Aus3DE will host the finale of the inaugural ‘Dual Crown’ series of eventing and jumping.

It will offer athletes the opportunity to collect points at officially sanctioned events with prize money and incentives on offer to those riders who top their respective discipline’s leader board at the end of the series.

The concept will also allow some of Australia’s leading equine events, to take their offerings to the next level and it’s hoped that through the Equestrian Australia Dual Crown, equestrian sport can be taken to new audiences.

The new Dual Crown series will see a number of high profile Australian equestrian events, including the Melbourne International 3 Day Event, Australian Show Jumping Championships, as well as the Aus3DE, partnering to deliver a national series of the highest level, offering $10,000 for each of the winners in eventing and jumping.

Riders Blog: Britain's Oliver Townend
The former World Number One in eventing and the current winner of the Event Rider Masters Series in the UK is coming to Aus3DE this year, competing on Tim Boland's horse Napoleon in the RM Williams CIC3*. Want to know more about Oliver? We ask him a few questions in preparation for the 2016 Aus3DE.

Q:  How long have you been riding?
A: Since I was seven years old.

Q: Tell us about your first horse.
A: Cool Mule (a 14.2hh pony) gave my my first real taste of success. Bought for just £825 because he was tricky and sharp, we won the Junior Newcomers Show Jumping title at the Horse of the Year Show when I was 11, and two years later, contested the pony European Eventing Championships.

Q:  What do you like most about eventing?
A: Definitely the challenge of all three phases.

Q: What has been your highlight of your eventing career to date?
A: Winning Badminton Horse Trials in 2009.

Q: How did it feel to win the prestigious Event Rider Masters Series in the UK this year?
A: It was a relief, more than anything. ERM was a series that I thought I should win from when I first heard about it, but it was an Olympic year and I was chasing the dream, so I had a slow start. I’m glad I didn’t leave it too late.

Q: Who has been the biggest influence on your riding career?
A: My dad.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about the Australian International Three Day Event?
A: Not being cold and wet!

Q: What do you like to do outside of riding?
A: I don’t have time to do anything else!

Q: What are your future goals and aspirations?
A: To ride at an Olympics, and to continue winning at every level.

Guess who will be coming to the 2016 Aus3de?
This year, there will be a few special guests visiting the Adelaide parklands for the 2016 Australian International Three Day Event! Joining the event will be Jolly the Elf, Jingles the Reindeer and Nimble, the beautiful grey horse from the Credit Union Christmas Pageant.

As an official Pageant mascot, Jolly’s job is to spread Christmas cheer and magic all over South Australia both on Pageant day and leading up to the event (including Aus3de). Jolly joins the Pageant Royalty on all official duties and of course takes to the streets of Adelaide come Pageant day.

Jingles is Jolly the Elf’s best friend and also joined the Pageant in 2011 as an official Pageant mascot. Jingles and Jolly do everything together in order to make sure they bring as much Christmas cheer and magic to the South Australian community as they can. As a reindeer, Jingles much prefers the cold but his love of Christmas will always prevail over the Australian heat!

Nipper and Nimble are two beautiful, graceful horses with a history that dates to the late 1800s, having been first enjoyed in the original Magic Cave. Both Nipper and Nimble appeared in the first Pageant in 1933. Since then, Nipper and Nimble have become two of the most popular characters in the Credit Union Christmas Pageant, not missing an event since their first appearance.

While Nipper will be having a rest, Nimble will be making an appearance on Saturday 5 November and Sunday 6 November from 11.00am until 3.00pm. Children, families and guests of the 2016 Aus3DE will have the chance to see Nimble, Jolly and Jingles up close.
