Welcome to the September-October 2016 edition of the Rangelands NRM eNews.

We've been busy facilitating a number of meetings to bring stakeholder groups together to discuss collaborative work. The first was for the Kimberley's Fitzroy River catchment and the second the first meeting of the Adaptive Management Partnership for the Great Victoria Desert. An Innovation Conference was also held for Goldfields pastoralists as a first step to facilitate a regional approach to land management, with some great two-way exchange of expertise and knowledge.

The Jigalong Women Rangers have had two successful trips out on-country which have enable transfer of knowledge from elders to the younger generation.

Great results have been achieved in detecting the invasive rubber vine in the Willare region of the Kimberley using aerial searching, crowdsourcing and on-ground methods.

In the Pilbara, work progressing on fire planning and prescribed burning in Millstream National Park and there's been some great on-ground achievements to treats WoNS over Mardie, Pedamulla and Urala stations.

Partnership kicks off Adaptive Management planning for Great Victoria Desert

Representatives from eight stakeholder groups came together in Kalgoorlie this month for the first meeting of the Great Victoria Desert Adaptive Management Partnership (AMP), which will coordinate conservation planning and actions for the Western Australian extent of the Great Victoria Desert (GVD). [Read more]

Trips enable intergenerational knowledge transfer for Jigalong Women Rangers

Two major trips onto Country were recently undertaken by the Jigalong Women Rangers to expand their experience and capacity. [Read more]
Kimberley

Meeting of minds considers Fitzroy River Catchment conservation opportunities

Representatives from eleven government, research and not-for-profit agencies met in Perth last month to discuss the different expertise and work agendas in the Kimberley’s Fitzroy River catchment. [Read more]

Combined ground and aerial searches close to eradicating rubber vine

The annual search for invasive rubber vine plants in the West Kimberley combining aerial and land searches has resulted in 1500 flowering vines being detected and destroyed. [Read more]

 

 

Hope for adapting Kimberley crocodiles as cane toad approaches

Crocodile numbers are likely to fall following the invasion of cane toads in the Kimberley, but at the same time the population will adapt and grow stronger and resilient, according to a CSIRO biologist. [Read more]
Pilbara

Millstream fire management reviewed at workshop

A Fire Planning and Review Workshop for Pilbara’s Millstream National Park took place to assess the success of prescribed burning and review ongoing management actions. [Read more]

 

Weed control success highlighted at Pilbara meeting

The recent Pilbara Mesquite Management Committee (PMMC) field trip and AGM provided the opportunity to see on ground achievements to contain and treat Weeds of National Significance (WoNS) over three stations in the Pilbara. [Read more]
