The Health Foundation funding call to improve Evidence into Practice
 
This new programme of grants from the Health Foundation of up to £50,000 will fund the development of tools and resources, based on completed research studies, to support the implementation of findings in practice.
Successful proposals will be those that appear most creative, innovative and likely to have impact. Evidence into Practice is designed to help research teams bridge the gap from academic research findings, to actionable information for people practising in the field.

Project grants - Action Medical Research for Children
Action Medical Research for Children invites outline proposals for its project grants. These support biomedical basic and clinical research related to preventing and treating disease and disability in children, with child health including problems affecting pregnancy, childbirth, babies, children and young people. In addition, grants are provided for research and development of equipment and techniques to improve diagnosis, therapy and assistive technology, including orthoses, prostheses and aids to daily living. Applications in the field of medical engineering are encouraged.

The National Institute for Health Research invites proposals for its commissioned research calls under the public health research programme. Proposals should address the effectiveness of interventions, particularly on population level, for one of the following subjects:
•maintaining or increasing physical activity for people in mid-life;
•preventing road injuries and promoting active travel;
•reducing sedentary behaviour such as sitting, lying down and watching television;
•promoting the benefits of or reducing harm from exposure to sunlight.

The Public Health Research (PHR) Programme funds research that evaluates non-NHS interventions intended to improve the health of the public, and reduce inequalities in health.  The scope of the programme is multi-disciplinary and broad, covering a range of public health interventions.

Department of Health Policy Research Programme call
The Department of Health’s (DH) Policy Research Programme (PRP) is a national research funding programme that commissions high quality, research-based evidence relevant to the full policy remit of the DH.
DH PRP invites an application in the following area:
  • Second Joint Call for the European Research Area Network on Illicit Drugs: Society and Responses to Drug Use
  • The European Research Area Network on Illicit Drugs (ERANID) aims to improve cooperation in drug research in order to make well-founded, evidence-based policy decisions.
The Department of Health is part of their second joint call which will fund multidisciplinary transnational research in ‘Society and responses to drug use‘.  The call encourages research that will provide a better understanding of society’s responses to drug use, building on and complementing the focus of the first joint call on understanding drug use pathways.
Other participating countries in this call are Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, Scotland and The Netherlands.  Only transnational projects of three or more countries will be funded.
A total of £250,000 to fund one or two projects is available.

NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) Programme Competition 31
RfPB competition 31 was launched recently in the same two-stage format as competition 28, 29 and 30.
The RfPB Programme funds NHS research.  The projects funded are for regionally derived applied research in health services and social care.  Applicants need to demonstrate the regional benefits of the proposed research although studies with national benefit will also be considered.
RfPB does not specify topics for research and encourages proposals for projects covering a wide range of health service issues and challenges.  The programme funds a broad range of topics and research methodologies that increase the effectiveness of NHS services, provide value for money and benefit patients.  The programme also supports relevant feasibility studies to help reach the next step of a definitive trial.

This supports research that evaluates public health interventions outside the NHS, specifically to provide new knowledge on the benefits, costs, acceptability and wider impacts of these interventions intended to improve the health of the public and reduce inequalities in health. NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands: PhD/MD Travel/Research Prize Application
The latest call for applications for the NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands PhD/MD Travel and Research bursary prize will open on 1st October 2016.
We have up to six prizes to award PhD/MD students studying in the East Midlands. THis prize will cover the

Future leaders fund 2016 NIHR Clinical Lectureships (Medical)
NIHR Clinical Lectureships (CLs) are specialty training posts that incorporate academic training.  NIHR Clinical Lecturers (CLs) spend 50% of their time undertaking specialist clinical training and 50% undertaking research or educational research training.
CLs are aimed at those who are advanced in their specialty training, have completed a research doctorate or equivalent and show outstanding potential for continuing a career in academic medicine.  The duration of a CL is for a maximum of 4 years and it is expected that CLs will complete their specialty training during this period.  Alongside clinical training, CLs will be able to further develop their academic skills and will be encouraged to apply for funding to support further Post-Doctoral or educational research training.

MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship (CRTF)
The MRC CRTF supports clinically active professionals within the UK to undertake a higher research degree.  The scheme can also provide post-doctoral funding for applicants who achieved their PhD more than five years ago but who have not been research active since due to clinical training commitments.
Applications are welcome across all areas of the MRC’s remit.  Applications may range from basic studies with relevance to mechanisms of disease to translational and developmental clinical research.
The CRTF provides between two and three years’ support.  A further year’s funding is available for patient-orientated CRTFs where the project will require significant amounts of patient contact. MORE>>>

Pre-doctoral fellowships: the CRTF provides a competitive personal salary up to but not including NHS consultant level, and funding of up to £20,000 per year.  This may cover consumables, equipment, conference travel, PhD and other course fees.
Post-doctoral fellowships: the fellowship provides a competitive personal salary, up to but not including NHS consultant level, research expenses, and travel costs at an appropriate level for the research, under full economic costs (FEC).

The Academy of Medical Sciences’ Springboard scheme
Springboard awards provide up to £100,000 over two years and a personalised package of career support to help newly independent biomedical scientists launch their research careers.
To be eligible to apply you must:
Hold an established academic research position at your institution.
Be in your first independent (salaried) position (i.e. group leader level) and
Be within 3 years (FTE) of appointment to this position.
Have sufficient time remaining in your current post to complete the proposed Springboard project.
Be based within one of the eligible higher education institutions.
And you must not:
Hold a clinical contract.
Be in receipt of substantial research funding as the Principal or Co-Investigator exceeding £75,000 p.a. (excluding your personal salary).
Eligible institutions may put forward up to three applications per round; you must be nominated by your institution in order to submit an application to the Academy.
When a round is open, prospective applicants should first contact the Springboard Champion within their HEI to express their interest in the scheme and find out how their internal selection will operate.

Researchers at the University of Bristol funded by an NIHR Programme Grant have developed a technique to help GPs identify which children with coughs and respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are most at risk of future hospitalisation.
