“Hearts & Treasures” Adult Faith Milestone

Continues This Sunday @ 9:30am

Adult Faith Milestone continues this Sunday at 9:30am in the Fellowship Hall.  We are blessed to have Mr. Micah Velilla leading this special series on “More than Money Matters” – which invites us to explore our relationship with God and how it guides our life-responses as disciples in daily decisions.  It is a wonderful opportunity for adults at all stages of life (incl. HS students).

Fall Cottage Gatherings for Everyone!

Our Cottage Gatherings over the past few years have been wonderful experiences, and we are excited to assemble our updated In-Touch groups this fall.

These gatherings provide opportunity for our LS family of faith to catch up with each other regarding our Spirt-Tugs and God-Stories, as well as offer focus on our G.I.F.T. (Growing in Faith Together) Discipleship emphasis.  At this year’s fall gatherings, everyone will receive a copy of their 2017 G.I.F.T. Discipleship Commitment Card, plus an updated version of the LS Time & Talent sheet.  Our commitments will be offered and celebrated on Sunday, Nov. 13 at our big G.I.F.T. Commitment Sunday, which will include the annual Congregational Ministry Meeting brunch, between services. Invitations are being sent out by each group. If you cannot attend your group’s gathering, please find another date on the list and rsvp to the appropriate leader.

Attention Time Warner Customers

If you are using Time Warner's RoadRunner emails, you most likely are missing emails sent to you from the church staff. If you are reading this, you obviously are getting our enews, so therefore are probably not aware you aren't receiving the other emails. This is because, for some yet to be determined reason, our mail server's IP address has been recently marked by someone as spam on either Time Warner's side or on one of our members sides.

Because of that, Time Warner has flagged us and is limiting us to what we can send to you. The enews and newsletter emails are sent through MailChimp, a mass email distributor and is not being blocked. They have an agreement with Time Warner and we have to follow certain protocols for these types of emails in order to use their service. We cannot use MailChimp for the staff individual emails.
The office has contacted both the church's domain host as well as Time Warner to rectify the situation. Our host said we needed to take it up with Time Warner as all our settings are correct on their end and there is nothing that they can see as to why we'd be blocked. All Time Warner could that say is that one of their customers may have marked us as spam and that the TW customers need to make sure we are allowed through their personal contacts/settings. I have submitted a support request to Time Warner's delivery support postmaster, but I'm not getting any response as of yet. So in the meantime, please make sure we are on your contact/allowed lists. Also, we would appreciate it if you could contact the Time Warner postmaster to let them know we are legitimate and you would like to get our emails! If you have an alternate email that you would like the church staff to use, please contact the office.

Place: Spirit Communications Park (1640 Freed Drive, Columbia SC)
Click here to RSVP by 10/28!

Plan to join us for lunch and a chance to learn about the work we do and the clients we serve. This year's event will be held at Spirit Communications Park, where we will all "step up to the plate" to serve seniors in need. Every Senior Counts showcases our services, and allows some of our clients the opportunity to share their stories of how Senior Resources has helped them maintain healthy and independent lifestyles.

All proceeds from this fundraiser support our Senior Companions, Meals On Wheels, Wellness Centers/Congregate Dining, Foster Grandparents, and the Retired & Senior Volunteer (RSVP) programs. There is no cost to attend the luncheon, but an RSVP is required.

How Thrivent Members can Help with Hurricane Matthew Disaster Relief

When tragic events like this occur, Thrivent Financial members and others want to know how they can help. As a membership organization of Christians committed to guiding members to be wise with money and live generously, Thrivent is supporting your generosity in the following ways:

$250,000 match on personal donations
Thrivent will match up to $250,000 in personal donations made on Thrivent.com to certain disaster relief organizations responding in Haiti and other areas affected by Hurricane Matthew. The dollar-for-dollar match is open to members and others who want to give, and will lead to a total combined impact of up to $500,000. For details about the match, visit the Disaster Response page on Thrivent.com
Get involved in grassroots disaster relief efforts
Consider getting involved in your community to help raise funds for disaster relief by forming a Thrivent Action Team. Thrivent provides promotional materials, t-shirts, and a $250 Community Impact Card that can be used as seed money to purchase project supplies and create promotional materials. To apply or to learn more about Thrivent Action Teams, go to Thrivent.com/actionteam.
Direct Choice Dollars®
Thrivent Choice® allows eligible members to weigh in on where Thrivent distributes some of its charitable outreach funding. If you have Choice Dollars available to direct, visit Thrivent.com and select any nonprofit in the catalog of eligible organizations, including those who are helping in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

Lessons for Sunday, October 16

First Reading: Genesis 32:22-31

Returning to the home he had fled many years before after stealing his brother’s birthright and his father’s blessing, Jacob wrestles all night long with a divine adversary who ultimately blesses him and changes his name to “Israel,” a name that means “he wrestles with God.”

Psalm 121

My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. (Ps. 121:2)

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 3:14--4:5

Paul continues his instruction of Timothy, his younger colleague in ministry, by emphasizing the importance of faithful teaching despite opposition.

Gospel: Luke 18:1-8

Jesus tells a parable of a hateful judge who is worn down by a widow’s pleas. Jesus is calling God’s people to cry out for justice and deliverance. For if an unethical judge will ultimately grant the plea of a persistent widow, how much more will God respond to those who call.

Church Humor...

Do you have some church humor you'd like to share? We would love to share it too! Send your humor to Lisa in the office.
Three Boys:
Three boys are in the school yard bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, "My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calles it a poem, and they give him $25." The second boy says, "That's nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a song, and they give him $200." The third boy says, "I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon, and it takes eight men to collect all the money!"
