International Board

Dear beloved EUROAVIAns,

This is the first letter from the current International Board of EUROAVIA. After a beautiful and tiring experience of AMEAC Bucharest; we, all the members of the IB, have started working immediately and I can, without a doubt, say that we all love what we are doing now and we are really happy to be where we are right now.

During the Congress, with all the participants, we have been through a lot of things. Alumni meeting was a great chance for all the participants to improve themselves with the kind and considerable help of the Alumni. On the first day of the Congress, the motivation they have, the fun they had could be easily seen on everyone’s faces.

Then the challenging five days had begun. We met a lot of new people, a new city, a new country. We discussed the future of our association, we made important decisions. We founded new Working Groups, we accepted new members to our family. I want to congratulate and welcome all of them. Our family is growing, and I am really happy to see it growing healthily. We had the moderation of EUROAVIA handed over. The current International Board is happy, motivated, and grateful to the Former International Board. They have been the perfect teachers, tutors, friends.

I know that this new Business Year will bring us more success; and I am glad that we will all be a part of this success. Despite all the challenges, I can not wait to celebrate our achievements all together. And I, on behalf of the International Board, invite all those reading this letter to contribute to our association, to be a active part of our family.

I believe that we can do everything we want, with the help of the friendships we form, the love we have, the support of our beautiful family. May this Business Year be the best you ever have. Share the EUROAVIA spirit. Looking forward to see you around Europe.

Cordially,

Yağmur Gençoğlu

Company Relations WG

Besides getting several paper cuts in the same day or receiving the news that someone in your family has betrayed you to your enemies, one of the most unpleasant experiences in life is a job interview.

                                                                                                  Lemony Snicket, The Carnivorous Carnival

Everyone fears to face an interview with a company, to present a project and to convince other people about how great is it and why should they invest on it.

In the industry world, we need to present ourselves as the winning bet and it is not easy to do so.
Within the Company Relations Working Group, we strongly believe that the activity developed in EUROAVIA (events, courses, projects, etc.) is the most efficient for students' growth among Europe and we are eager to let everyone know.

We would like to train you to lose the fear to the companies, because once you face them for asking for sponsorship, nothing can stop you. We will teach you how to be self-aware, open-minded and together, as a team, we will help each other to improve and to acquire the soft skills that will impress any Human Resources manager.

If you are looking for challenges and to develop yourself in a professional environment, this is your working group. We are looking for restless EUROAVIAns that want to overcome their limits, to improve daily and to work hard for it.

Join us and become a real professional!

AS Rzeszów

Hi EUROAVIAns!

First of all, we would like to introduce you a new AS Rzeszow Local Board, which was elected in May this year:

President: Piotr Skoczylas

Secretary: Aleksandra Kwiecień

Treasurer:  Mateusz Rakieć

International Contact Member:  Michał Stąpor

Public Relations:  Anna Żmudka

As it’s been a while since our last NL, we would like to share with you all what we’ve been up to for a past couple of months.

The crucial part of our activities were technical projects. Right now we are focusing on a two main issues. First one is the multirotor drone, which has been fully designed and created by new group developed inside of our AS – Team EuroAvionic! Aims of the group involve practice and design of avionics, especially for UAVs.

They are currently working on a quadcopter and vision systems for International Micro Air Vehicle Conference and Competition 2016 (IMAV 2016). This event will take place in Beijing, China, October 17-21, 2016. There are many parts of such a huge competition, but the one they chosen to participate in is called Indoor.

In this particular section of tournament the team’s device needs to enter a building in the drilling platform to move some important objects to safe locations. The main mission elements are designed as follows:

 1. Taking off from a moving platform
 2. Entering the building via different entrances: doorway, chimney or window.
 3. Pickup objects and release them to the correct locations.
 4. Exiting the building.
 5. Landing on the moving platform.
 6. Mapping of the indoor environments.

Potential purpose of both vehicle as well as his software is rescuing action during malfunction or crash of a drilling platform.

The whole vision setup of the quadcopter will come from cameras, which are usually created for needs of entertainment systems. Taking under consideration its parameters and popularity, it will most likely be either Microsoft Kinect or Sony PlayStation Move. Interpretation of an image will take place inside of the drone by using chips known from today’s smartphones.

Although navigation signals will be transferred to an EUROAVIA flight controller (picture below), which was completely programmed by members of Team EuroAvionic. Its main goal is to assure fully automatic maneuvering of the device.

These genius guys are working really hard to compete with best teams from all over the world so keep your fingers crossed!

The other group in our AS is currently working on aircraft model in a configuration of a flying wing. This construction is made almost completely of laminate and fiberglass. It’s main purpose would be reconnaissance flights. Such UAV had already been constructed by our AS few years back. At the beginning of last semester we digged up this project and decided to face the challenge one more time. It wasn’t an easy task as we had to adjust a lot of things in order to make it fly again.

We consider this project as a great exercise for a new, fresh team which will participate in ACC 2017 and further events. Hopefully, our renovated model will accomplish at least as much as the last one or maybe even improve some aspects of its precursor.

We would also like it to take part in a local competition, which will be held in October. For now, work is in progress and we really hope it will fly well once it’s done :). Below you have some pictures presenting our first steps on this matter.

Apart from it, we had a pleasure to be a part of an Airshow in our region on 25th of June. We had our very own EUROAVIA stand at this event so we could enjoy watching stunts performed by best pilots in Poland. What is more, in May we organized an Air Conference for students of our universities. Along with it, we held a few workshops, in order to improve students practical skills.

For the future we are planning to participate in Air Cargo Challenge and maybe came up with a concept of rocket model.

See you around Europe guys!

During March 14th to 18th, we will be hosting the first International Fly-In in Ireland for EUROAVIA. There will be 30 participants from all over Europe attending the 3 days event. It will primarily be based in Carlow with one full day in Dublin. We will also be visiting the Waterford Aeroclub for a flying experience and promoting the Irish Aviation/Aerospace Industry.

During the first day of the event we will be welcoming our participants and escorting them to their accommodation for the duration of the event.  On the second day when the main events begin to take place, we will hold a two day workshop on the building of a small remote control plane. We will split the group into 6 teams of 5 and give them the basic theory and design criteria for their electronically controlled winged model. The participants will draw up their preliminary designs at the end of the day.  On the third day we will begin to construct and test the model aero planes, the team with the best plane will be declared as the winning team. During this, there will be an excursion to Waterford Aeroclub where students will get the chance to fly and construct their model planes on the same day. During the last day of the events, we will transfer to Dublin for St. Patricks festival where we will promote the Irish culture and hospitality during the day attending the parade and other related events, possibly with a tour of an aerospace related company. During that evening we will have the traditional Final Dinner of the event in an Irish cuisine restaurant in Inner Dublin city.  On the final day, we will wave participants on as they journey home to their own Countries, parting with enjoyment and achievement having completed the event.

AS Valencia

When the inscriptions for the Rocket Workshop were opened, here, in AS Valencia, we all were very excited, it sounded like an amazing event, and all of us wanted to go. Four of our members could go, and the preparations for the travel started. On 14th August their plane left Valencia, and this awesome experience started. Meeting people from five AS (AS Cluj-Napoca, who organized and hosted the event, AS Napoli, AS Patras, AS Pisa and AS Sevilla), our members spent the first day making ice-breaking activities and tourism. During the week, they learnt how to construct a rocket, and in different teams, they designed and constructed their own one. On the launch day, some of our members were on the winner teams. The highest rocket was EUROCRACIA, followed by MIG-69, Patras we miss you and Pistacchio. Moreover, the best design was for Patras we miss you team. But the participants of the event also had fun, with the Spirits Night, where Valencia took Moscatel and Patxarán (the first one is wine, and the second one is a sloe flavored liqueur, typical from the North of Spain), the visits and night activities, where they had to find some pubs asking on the streets, and win points following different funny rules, like taking selfies with the waiters, asking for the number of random people, learning the first two verses of the Romanian hymn by asking it on the streets… The winner team was the one formed by AS Patras and AS Valencia. When the week finished, our members came back full of energy, motivation and knowing a lot of new things.

But not long after that, the following international event arrived. For the AMEAC, hosted by AS Bucharest, three of our members went in representation of our AS, and all the WG, except Press WG were represented by our members too. From 11th to 17th September, eight of us went to Romania, meeting old and new friends. During the week, all the AS and WG talked about their work on the last Business Year, Glasgow became part of our family as PAS and the new International Board was ratified. One of the biggest issues discussed were the implementation of the new CI, highly defended by AS Valencia.
It is also remarkable that it has was held the first edition of the EUROAVIA’s cup, where the association delivered a cup at its most efficient AS. We’re proud to say that they considered us the winners of it, for our implication with them. They valued the organization of international events (we host the EMEAC 2016 last April), and the participation on them (our members went to the AMEAC 2015 in Leuven, the FoWo in Rzeszow, the RoWo in Cluj Napoca, and we made a cultural exchange with AS Napoli). They valued the number of members (on the last business year we had 158) and the participation on the international work too (we have been the 27% of the people working on it). We consider ourselves responsible of helping with the changes that make EUROAVIA to grow up, and we will continue working on it.
At the same time of the AMEAC, in our AS we started the new year, and we had a lot of work. The first week, we made a water rocket exhibition for showing it to the new students, before a presentation of our AS. We were on the hall of our school every morning of that week, talking with the students, and explaining them about EUROAVIA. On 8th we had our first meeting, where we talked about our work on the last business year, our technical projects, and what are we going to do this year. The new local board was ratified, and then we went to eat paella all together. We have been on different faculties of our University too, and we’re happy with the participation and motivation of the new members. They have created a drones team, so it means that a new technical Project has born. For this year, we are organizing a lot of different activities and projects for our local members, now that we’re 170, and we hope we will continue growing and reaching even more students willing to participate with us and becoming part of EUROAVIA.

EUROAVIA Madrid, continuing with the EUROAVIA’s international essence, hosted a symposium from the September 27th to October 1st. The main theme of the event was “Flight Tests” and the participants had the opportunity to attend workshops and lectures held by well-known professionals in the aerospace sector.

The attendees to the event came from all over Europe: Napoli, Pisa, Braunschweig, Berlin, Dresden. Sttutgart, Israel, Rzeszów, Bucharest, Valencia and Seville. In addition, the activities were opened for every student of the ETSIAE who wanted to join, involving as well local members and students.

The topic selected for the symposium was very interesting for the students as flight tests are a key point of the design, manufacturing and performance of the aircrafts. Five different lectures were delivered and two workshops were organized linked to this issue.

Luckily, we had the chance of having with us during the event great authorities in the aerospace sector such as:

  • Amable Liñán: mundial authority on the combustion field. Awarded with the prize “Príncipe de Asturias” (1993) for the Scientific and Technical Research. Teacher of more than 5,000 engineers.

  • Lieutenant Jesús Álvaro Miguel Martínez: member of the military engineer’s body. Flight test engineer at the PCMHEL (Unidad de Ensayos en Vuelo del Parque y Centro de Mantenimiento de helicópteros del Ejército de Tierra)

  • Colonel Rafael Gómez Blanco: member of the military engineer’s body.

  • Jorge Caballero Escribano: Flight Line Engineer. Airbus Defence and Space.

  • Jorge Fuentes Caselles: Head of Airbus Derivatives Flight Test in Airbus Defense and Space.

  • Cristina Cuerno Rejado: professor at UPM (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) and member of the CIAIAC (Comisión de investigación de accidentes e incidente de aviación civil)

The workshop were delivered by students of the UPM María del Mar Conforto López, Alberto Prudencio Alútiz y José Manuel Pérez Pozo and by Jorge Caballero Escribano, previously mentioned.

This has been a great opportunity to get first-hand knowledge about flight tests, as well as for getting to know European colleagues with the same interests as the students of the UPM and EUROAVIA Madrid’s members.

On behalf of EUROAVIA Madrid, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to:

  • All the people involved somehow in the event, they made it both a complete success and an unforgettable experience.

  • The lecturers who, altruistically, delivered the conferences and shared with all of us their knowledge in a passionate and dynamic way. Thank you very much for your enthusiasm!

  • The students who organized the event and the ones who delivered the workshops.

  • And we couldn’t forget about our sponsors: imasDrone, UPM and ETSIAE, for relying on us from the beginning.

Last but not least, thank you very much to the organizing team who has been working the past eight months in order to make the event possible. Thank you so much!

As a perfect end, a picture because we all know a picture is worth a thousand words!

PAM Zewail City

A belief that people interested in the field of aerospace and aeronautics have the right to know more about it and even get some hands-on in the field is what got us started. We also believe that those who may not be interested deserve to get the general knowledge as it may result in more people finding joy in aerospace and aeronautics. These ideas coincide with the goals of EUROAVIA, which is why we started to seek being a PAM.

The journey to being part of EUROAVIA started with writing our motivation letter which described our enthusiasm to join this great organization. We hoped, and are setting the plans, to be a channel of broadcasting aerospace knowledge to everyone in the region. We then joined and gave a presentation in “The Annual Meeting of the EUROAVIA Congress” (AMEAC) in which we described why we believe we have the potential to join and discussed the mission and vision of our branch. We got a staggering 36 out of 38 votes of the teams and with that, we finally got our approval to be a PAM of EUROAVIA.

The local board was then created with the high board consisting of a president, two secretaries and a treasurer.

We arranged a seminar two weeks ago at Zewail City to announce the start of EUROAVIA Zewail City.

The dean of schools was present and showed great support and enthusiasm to the idea.

Also, we set a booth where we replied to people’s inquiries. We also started our recruitment process just after the seminar, receiving a total of 63 applications.

We began interviewing the applicants on the 2nd of October, and we are expecting to finish the interviews by the 13th of October. We are planning to arrange for our first general meeting as EUROAVIA Zewail City by the beginning of the following week, and this shall be the official beginning of our work as a team. Currently, all of our team will consist of students inside the city, but we are planning to extend our project to other places across the country.

Our future plans include recruiting students from other universities in Egypt. It will be a first priority for EUROAVIA ZC board to discuss the membership program for students outside our university. We believe that this will help us spread our vision all over Egypt and will later benefit us in establishing a strong base for our community. Also, being a well-known association across the country will make it easier for us to find sponsors and to contact guest speakers and technicians to arrange workshops and help us with the events we plan to host.
