God the Creator: Science + Faith
View this email in your browser
Greetings! Parents of 10am 1st grade kids, we're making a second class. Please make sure to check the new class lists to find out what classroom your child is in and who their teacher will be. Last week about half of our students learned about God the Creator. So we've provided a little information for you regarding that topic and focused a bit on how faith and science should work together. As always, you'll find our upcoming schedule and our FORMED feature.
Peace, Jenna Ripp
Check out this great promo video for the blog, Strange Notions, mentioned below!
Science + Faith, are they Friends or Enemies?
  • Blog - Check out the Strange Notions Blog.  It's an awesome resource that was put together to help foster constructive conversation between Catholics and Atheists.  There are tons of great articles, but I want to point you to three in particular: Does Evolution Contradict Genesis?, Is God too Complex to be the Creator? and The Myth of the War between Science and Religion.
  • Easy to read Catholic author - Scott Hahn is a Catholic author who was once a Lutheran and wanted to "prove the Church wrong." In his quest to do so, he actually found a lot of answers.  Because of his background, many of his books are very heavily based on the Bible. For this week's topic, I suggest checking out Reasons to Believe and Answering the New Atheism.
  • "Heavier" Reading- Two suggestions here: St. John Paul II's Fides et Ratio (or Faith & Reason). He was one of our greatest Popes, and an incredibly intelligent man. In this encyclical, he addresses the relationship between faith and reason. You can also check out the book Handbook of Catholic Apologetics by Peter Kreeft. It provides arguments for both sides, so you can better understand the Catholic reasoning and even address questions that your friends, or you, may have.
  • Textbook- Yes, I'm including a textbook here. Faith, Science, and Reason: Theology on the Cutting Edge is for middle or high schoolers, but it's an awesome resource. If you don't want to purchase it yourself, I have a copy that you're more than welcome to borrow.
