NEW-FOUND-LANDS: Exploring historical and contemporary connections between Newfoundland and the Caribbean diaspora

curated by Bushra Junaid and Pamela Edmonds

September 9th – October 18th, 2016
Through performance, installation, cuisine, and an exhibition of new and existing works by Canadian-based artists, New-Found-Lands investigates historical and contemporary connections between Newfoundland and the Caribbean diaspora. This multidisciplinary project explores the 300-year history of Newfoundland-Caribbean trade in salt, cod, rum and other mercantile products; reflects on personal ties and varied histories of movement and migration; reveals connections between Newfoundland and Caribbean culture and language; and includes an Afrofuturist performance and archival laboratory which uncover buried truths about Canada’s role in the transatlantic slave trade. Together this engaging work brings new perspectives to the respective islands from a diversity of practices and approaches.

The St. John's Storytelling Festival is a not-for-profit organization that has been active in the Storytelling community of Newfoundland and Labrador since 2004. The St. John's Storytelling Festival hosts and organizes an annual Storytelling festival bringing storytellers from across the Province, Canada and internationally to the stage in St. John's. We host the Storytelling Circle on the second Thursday of the month in St. John's, and we offer school visits to local schools, and children's charities in conjunction with our annual festival. The function of this organization is to showcase Newfoundland storytellers and contribute to the development of new storytellers in the province. The St. John's Storytelling Festival also conducts workshops annually to highlight and explore the oral traditions of the Province. The activities of the St. John's Storytelling Festival are directed by a Board of four to eight volunteers.

The mandate of the St. John's Storytelling Festival is to promote the art and tradition of storytelling in Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout Canada; to foster creative expression of this art; and to promote cooperat
ion among organizations related to the art and tradition of storytelling in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Where: St. Michael's Printshop Gallery, 72 Harbour Drive, upstairs

When: 7–9:30pm, every Wednesday, beginning October 19th

$30 a week per person (or pay what you can)
*bring your own supplies*

Bring your watercolour supplies, a project you're working on or want to start, and paint in a group atmosphere with experienced watercolourist, April White. April will be working on her own projects, but will be present to answer questions, help you with your technique, and offer moral support. You will set up and paint around the large table in the St. Michael's Printshop Gallery. April encourages the following: talking about ideas, experimenting, never knowing when you're finished, mixed media, and breaking and/or following the rules.

If you've taken any sort of watercolour intro lesson, then this is a great way to keep painting in a supportive environment.

Contact April at
aprilmarylynn@gmail.com if you have any questions.
