About UCARE

UCARE is a coalition of community and UVa members. UCARE has been funded by the Andrus Family Fund during our entire life, beginning with a small grant in the fall of 2007. That funding has supported many UVa students, UVa faculty member and UCARE project director Frank Dukes, and numerous community initiatives. It has also funded staff time to keep up this newsletter--which has nearly 400 subscribers.

Our funding from Andrus ended as of May 31, 2015. But we are not going away. In many ways, our work within UVa has already been successful. We have prompted changes in how UVa understands and represents its history--from student guides all the way to the President. We have called attention to racial disparities in student admissions and faculty recruitment as well as in conditions of workers, including the living wage. Our voice is widely respected.

But UCARE was founded with the goal of reaching beyond the University in order to address the legacy of racial harm that may be seen in housing, employment, health, education, the justice system, and more. And while we have supported many efforts to address these issues, that work is a long ways from being over.

We are confident that we can secure funding in the future for this work. In the meantime, you will see UCARE at UVa and in the community, including this newsletter.

If you have ideas for funding sources please email us at ucarestaff@gmail.com.

And, as before, if you have community events of interest please let us know at that same address.
