What's on at MAC

Dear Friend,

November is looking exciting. In MAC's exhibition spaces, the ordinary becomes extraordinary and the forgotten objects of the everyday take centre stage. The performance spaces are busy with great live music on Firday nights. The Mosaic Festival of Arts will fill the building with two weeks of art, music and performance. And in December we invite you to dance, whether everyone is watching or not!

Mande Bijelic’s Plugholes and Other Paintings
Mande Bijelic

Now open
Exhibition runs until Sat 19 Nov 2016

Free entry

Overlooked by most, the common place is reframed by Bijelic, and presented to us as scenes and objects of great intrigue.

This exhibition spans 20 years of Bijelic’s practice, combining a retrospective selection of paintings with new works from her series of Plughole paintings. In this series, bathtub plugholes from around the world are lovingly rendered in paint; each an entry point to a global network of connectivity though a vast web of unseen plumbing.

Decoding Visual Excess
Nathan Taylor

Opening 6pm Wed 23 Nov
Exhibition runs 24 Nov - 17 Dec 2016
Free entry

In a world of visual excess, this slow journey through paint reassesses the consumable objects that comprise our contemporary cultural makeup. Abandoned rubbish, half eaten junk food and curious food constructions all quietly consider notions of beauty, excess and personal identity.

Artist Nathan Taylor uses hyper-realistic painting to explore and decode a visually saturated world. Viewers will find themselves lost in the exquisitely rendered surface of a crushed beer can, an abandoned doughnut, or a heavenly confection.

Meet the artist
Nathan  will be presenting a free floor talk about his work followed by tea and scones. All are welcome!
2pm on Sat 26 Nov

Dance Like Everyone is Watching

Opening 6pm Thurs 1 Dec
Exhibition runs Fri 2 Dec - Sat 17 Dec 2016
Free entry

Al Young’s bright and bold paintings are all about dancing. He dances while he paints, feeding his energy and movement into the artworks he creates.

Inspired by an article called “Dance While Everyone is Watching” by disability advocate Stella Young, this body of work responds to her notion that every individual has a right to enjoy dancing publicly.

Young’s vibrant artworks refuse to go quietly unnoticed. They celebrate movement in an example of how people living with a disability should not be defined by their disability in an exhibition that will bring a smile to your face, hope to your heart, and an irresistible tap to your feet.
