Encampment Ordinance Update

I encourage you to attend or watch this Friday’s Human Services & Public Health Committee (at 9:30 am in Chambers, or via the web at seattlechannel.org); Councilmember Bagshaw will lead a discussion of how the proposed legislation has changed from the first draft to reflect concerns we’ve heard from our constituents, neighborhood groups, and the business community.

While I am unable to be at the table for this meeting, I want to make it clear that I support her decision that we should not vote on a piece of legislation on Friday. I believe we need to take the time to get this done right, not just done and we still have more work to do if we are going to move forward with this legislation.

Thank you to all of those who have reached out to our office with your comments on this issue, and please stay tuned for next week's special edition of On the Job with Rob relaying more of my thoughts around this topic.

October is Emergency Preparedness Month

As a father of three, a husband, and a city councilmember, emergency preparedness is something I take very seriously. In observance of Emergency Preparedness month, I want to share a few pieces of information to help you prepare yourself, your family, and your community for big disaster:

  • First, here's a very helpful infographic to help you build an emergency kit, make a plan, and learn more about city resources.
  • And second, did you know that year round Seattle's Office of Emergency Management offers free training and information sessions to individuals, businesses, community groups, schools and other organizations throughout Seattle? Click here to learn more or sign up.

D4 Spotlight: Youthcare

We had a great time volunteering in Youthcare's clothing bank, the Basement Boutique, last week. The Basement Boutique is a space where youth experiencing homelessness can come and ‘shop’ for work and interview appropriate clothing while receiving guidance from a professional stylist to help them build their confidence and feel good about themselves as they prepare for the next phase of their lives.

In our commitment to volunteering as a team each quarter, we love the opportunity to get to roll up our sleeves and experience the incredible programs our D4 nonprofits provide the community.

YouthCare builds confidence and self-sufficiency for homeless youth by providing a continuum of care that includes outreach, basic services, emergency shelter, housing, counseling, education, and employment training. Learn more about Youthcare, here.

Yours in civil service,
