The pups have been spotted!

As the pups are getting older and so more mobile, there have been more frequent sightings of the wild dog pack in the park over the past month. This is one of two known wild dog packs in the Lower Zambezi that is lead by the infamous three-legged alpha female who has been around for years. The pack is now made up of seven adults and nine pups.. and as wild dogs do, they are on the move!

Elephant Ignite comes to the Lower Zambezi

The Elephant Ignite Expedition is a journey by a handful of 'women for wildlife' across southern and eastern Africa to raise awareness about the plight of elephants and other wildlife. While passing through the Lower Zambezi, the group visited CLZ as well as the Mugurameno community - both meeting the conservation club pupils who received beautifully designed activity booklets filled with fun facts about the elephant, as well as the local farmers to hear their stories on human-wildlife-conflicts. Find out more about their journey, their mission, their passion here: Elephant Ignite

Blood and law training for the Dog Unit

The DNPW/CLZ canine unit received some invaluable training this month on 'Tryps' testing and prosecutions. Dr. Amos Chota from UNZA Veterinary School taught the handlers how to perform blood tests for Tryposomanias (sleeping sickness) - one of the biggest threats to the dogs in the area and early detection is crucial for successful treatment. The handlers were also given training on the law surrounding their operations, how they can apprehend someone successfully and how to present their case in court, undertaken by a prosecutor from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW).

Going barefeet at the Interschool Conservation Quiz

This year's Interschool Conservation Quiz that is held amongst the Chiawa GMA schools every year was yet another great success! The winning team and runner-up represented the Gota-Gota community, a small far-off village that sits along the Kafue river in the foothills of the escarpment. Quiz brains were given a welcome break in between quiz rounds with a fantastic performance by the Chitende High School drama group supported by the amazing Barefeet Theatre through the Time + Tide Foundation. Good thing it was International Day of No Shoes!

Thanks to Homenet Zambia, Bookworld, Elephant Ignite Expedition, Troy Page and many others for prizes; Zambeef for transport and Chakanaka Farms for vegetables and bananas to feed the hungry brainies!

Bringing the beach to Lusaka

CLZ's UV Beach Party, held at the Lusaka Gymkhana Club this month saw nine Glow-in-the-Dark volleyball teams compete in the dark of the night with over 140 spectators supporting the teams while enjoying the live music and delicious cocktails from the CLZ Beach Bar. The event raised over US$1,500 for CLZ and US$ 1,000 for the CLZ Mudhogs who will be competing at the annual Elephant Charge.

A HUGE thank you to all the sponsors, supporters and volunteers who made this event possible - Zambeef, Kanyemba, Homenet, Paintball Mania, R&G Events/Zambian Breweries, Gwabi River Lodge, Orange Tree, Lusaka Gymkhana Club, The Pantry, Chongwe House, Proflight, Benson Sound, Ben Thurairatnam and the amazing DJs. Finally a huge thanks to the Irwin's for the transport and set up of the Beach Bar!
