Your Goal: To Keep on Writing
If you're a writer seeking more on the craft of writing, you're in the right place.

Keep Moving Forward

Do you have days when you cannot write? When the words just won’t come or when your day is too busy for a session at your keyboard. Other writers experience it too. You are not alone. As fellow writer Janice L. Dick expressed in her September blog post, other things get in the way. There’s family and job and more, but you need to experience life to have something to write about.

What if you stayed in your office while a family gathering goes on outside your closed door? Will you ignore it all? There will be distractions, conversations you wish to join in, then laughter, and you missed out. There could be a small child rapping at the door saying, “Come out, please.”

What if you decide not to have a holiday so you can get your writing done? Will it help the cause? Probably not. Some of your finest material comes from living an interesting and full life. Writing is just one part of it. How big that part is depends on you. Here are three things that can help you move forward:

Take a walk in nature. It does wonders for the soul and your creative self. The exercise will do you good as well.

Spend time with family and friends. Spend time with those who are "in your corner" and give you positive energy. Play a game of catch with a grandchild, if you have one, or call up a friend long distance and chat. Then afterwards, go back to your desk and write with renewed enthusiasm.

Read.  Read the work of other authors who excite, inspire you and encourage. Then sit down and write.

Writing is lonely enough without isolating yourself. True, there are times you need to do that to get a project done or meet a deadline. Then reward yourself by doing something you enjoy. Listen to music, draw or paint, or get a latte.

A reader commented on Jan’s post that it’s so easy to get wrapped up in not getting the writing done and that Jan’s priorities seemed to be in perfect order.

I imagine Jan chuckling as she responds. “Well, on paper they are, but in reality, they sometimes get skewed. It’s a continual journey of re-setting those priorities according to what God brings into my life.”

Set your goals and strive to move forward with your writing in the middle of your busy and full life and you’ll have much to write about.
