IN A CRAB SHELL

With nearly half the undergraduate population of Maryland enrolled at 16 colleges, on 23 campuses and 1000+ locations, it can be challenging to capture and share all that’s happening at Maryland’s community colleges.

However, with In A Crab Shell, we are going to try.

Similar to the more well-known phrase, in a nutshell -- In A Crab Shell will provide a concise, bi-monthly discussion of issues important to higher education and the State of Maryland.

This is part 2 of a two-part briefing on dual enrollment programs.
Part 1 covered general dual enrollment programs and their benefits to students.
Part 2 covers special types of dual enrollment programs called middle college programs and early college access programs.

All dual enrollment programs fast track students toward
college and career.

What's a Middle College Program?

Maryland’s Middle College programs: Students obtain a high school diploma and an Associate degree simultaneously; programs are academically rigorous, but paired with strong academic support; classes are small and often made of historically under-served student populations; programs are tuition-free or discounted.

What's an Early College Access program?

Maryland’s Early College Access programs are defined by an MOU between the community college and the local school system; students obtain a high school diploma while simultaneously earning credits needed for an AA degree, and/or simultaneously obtaining a recognized industry or career certification; programs provide strong academic support; may run 4 – 5 years; and are tuition-free or discounted.
