Mercy Chefs Heads to Haiti to Deliver Clean Water

Mercy Chefs deploys to Haiti

PORTSMOUTH, VA, October 8, 2016 | Christian News Service | – Mercy Chefs, a Hampton Roads based non-profit, disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization departs Saturday morning for Haiti. Their team will deliver clean water solutions to the areas of Les Cayes and Miragoane for survivors of Hurricane Matthew.

Mercy Chefs’ Founder and President, Gary LeBlanc says, “One of the first key issues survivors will face is water contamination. It is crucial that we get clean water into their hands as quickly as possible to prevent disease and dehydration, which compound the risk of death following a disaster.”

This weekend, to meet that need, Mercy Chefs will install a water filtration unit capable of providing 120 gallons of potable water per hour – enough for 5,000 people daily. In addition, they will pass out 250 individual water purification straws. Each straw will provide one person with up to six months of clean drinking water.

The organization has already identified another location in Cap Haitien, Haiti which is in need of an even larger unit. Their team plans to return within the month to deliver and install a permanent water purification system there, which will provide 40,000 people with access to potable water.
