PRE-ORDER YOUR THANKSGIVING TURKEYS
We are so excited to able to offer you what the times has called "the rolls royce of turkeys" this Thanksgiving. The Kelly family has produced turkeys since 1971. Over the years the Kelly Bronze turkey has won too many awards to mention, and has become the turkey of choice for discerning customers and celebrity chefs who want the very best for the most important meal of the year. The turkeys are raised on Heritage Glen Farm, 100 acres of turkey paradise in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The turkeys will cost between $11.95 and $12.50 per pound, and will be delivered to your residence, likely on 11/19/16. If you're interested, please fill out this form. Happy thanksgiving!
HURRICANE MATTHEW
With Hurricane Matthew making his way along tbe Southeast, we are crossing our fingers that it will run its course damage free. However our farmers are directly affected by the weather, so we thank you in advance for understanding if we need to make last minute swaps.
STORAGE TIPS
Feel like your chard wilts in a day? Apples getting soft? Check out our handy storage guide to keep your fruits and veggies crisp and delicious. Here are some recommendations for this week's produce:
- Kale requires a bit of preparation before storage, but once done you will keep your kale fresh and crispy for much longer. As soon as you get home with your kale (or as soon as you have a few minutes…I know we don’t all have the luxury of a quite empty house to come home to) fill a bowl with cool water and submerge the kale in the water. Allow to sit for several minutes, swish, let sit and then remove. Wrap kale in a damp paper towel and store in a sealed storage bag for up to 5 days.
-
Wait to wash bok choy until you are ready to use it. Once washing, the leaves tend to wilt. Bok choy can be stored in the refrigerator (preferably in the crisper section), and is best eaten within 3-4 days.
- Carrots can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a month if stored properly. Cut off carrot greens, place carrots in a containers with lid and cover completely in water. Keep container in the refrigerator, changing the water ever 4-5 days.
- You can store your sweet potatoes at room temperature in a well-ventilated area for several weeks. Don’t store your sweet potatoes in the refrigerator.
- Keep raw cauliflower in the refrigerator, tightly wrapped, for three to five days.
- Apples slowly continue ripening after picking, so they are best stored in your “Green Bag” for up to a week in the crisper in your refrigerator. Be sure you don’t store apples freely in the crisper with other items. The gases released by the apples will cause your other items to go bad sooner.
- Store onions in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place; light can cause bitterness so keep them somewhere dark. They readily absorb moisture so avoid leaving them anywhere damp (in a cupboard under a sink, for example) and also, don’t store them near potatoes as these give off moisture and gas and will make onions spoil more rapidly.
