Hi Moms and Dads

This newsletter is a very important form of communication. If you do not receive one via email, please let Jane have your email so that we can send you one and if you would prefer a hard copy in your child’s pocket, please let Jane know so that we can do this for you!
Welcome back to the 4th Term. It certainly is amazing that we are this far in the year already.
It is a short and very busy term with much to do and much excitement as we move towards the end of the year and Christmas time!!
I have included the Christmas Play dates and times for you to diarise early. Please note that we have changed things a bit and we are now doing all the Christmas plays on a Saturday. Please take special note of the time of your child’s play.
We wish you a happy term and look forward to having loads of fun learning through play with your children.
Thanks to all the Stay and Play staff for looking after the children during holiday care. The children had lots of fun!!!
PLEASE NOTE JUST TO REMIND YOU, WE ARE NOT LEGALLY ALLOWED TO DISPENSE ANY MEDICATION, which means that we cannot have any medication such as Panado, Ponstel etc at school.
  • Each parent will need to bring in some medication that their child has at home for pain and fever. This medication will be labelled and kept with the teacher in case the child needs it. If we do not have any medication for your child at school and they get a temperature then we will have to request that you fetch your child or come to school to give us some medicine for them.
  • We will also be adding to our medication file. If you need us to give your child medicine during the school day, you will as at present need to sign consent but also provide us with your Dr’s name and a few details on when you last gave medication etc. This will all be on the new form in the file.
CLASS  REPS!!!!
Hi All. I will be emailing you all shortly in connection with our Tour De Fish Hoek Bicycle Rally which is coming up on Saturday 29th October.

SAFE HOME/ FOSTER CARE

Our local office of Department of Social Development in Fish Hoek are desperately looking for families who could foster children. We have at the moment one child in our school who is on that list and desperately needs foster care. If anyone would like to find out more about it or know someone who would be interested in fostering a child, please come and chat to me.

WEEK 1
Parenting survival guide:

An interesting article taken from Kensway Parenting 911, June 2011, Newsletter.

“As a parent, you know how hard it is to maintain a healthy balance between work and family. After a day at the office, most parents feel drained and stressed and this rubs off on their children. Apart from your work and holding it all together, growing up is hard work too, often causing children stress – they don’t need yours added to their own. Since stress also affects your children, it’s important that you stay calm and have your wits about you at all times. Unfortunately, as a parent, you simply cannot take a sedative that will affect your mental capacity or make you drowsy – after all, you’re still on call for the kid’s 24//7.
Comment
One of the key features of the Parenting 911 approach is that it gives parents the tools whereby children own their own problems. This is done by constantly making your child aware that they’re making choices and when they make a bad choice you are not going to punish them, but rather they are asking you to carry out the consequence. Here are a few examples:

Your child wakes up and doesn’t want to go to school, you let him know that he doesn’t have to go, but unfortunately he’s going to have to ask his teacher if he can stay home. If the teacher agrees then you tell him that you’ll bring him home. All you have to do is pre-arrange with the teacher if this situation occurs.

If your child doesn’t want to put on his safety belt he doesn’t have to, but you will have to stop at a police station and he will have to ask the policeman if he doesn’t have to wear a seatbelt.

Your child wants to eat in front of the TV. You let him know that he can but the TV will be turned off and stay off for the rest of the evening, or he can come to the table, eat and then watch live TV after he has eaten.

Your child doesn’t want to eat his supper he doesn’t have to, but all this means is that he’s choosing to go to his room and play there until bedtime. If he gets hungry later, unfortunately, you tell him, it’s too late and all he can have is some dry bread and water. He’s not going to starve and he made the choice.

The above are just a few examples whereby you can stay calm and in control. You are never punishing them, they made the choice and you’re just explaining in a calm and controlled manner what their choice means.

A mother called 702 the other day and was quite desperate. Her 9 year old would only eat junk food. He refused to eat any normal healthy food that she put in front of him. Imagine how much power this child has over its mother. All she had to do was let him know what the consequences were i.e. no junk food or any other privileges until he decided that he was prepared to eat the regular meals.

One of the major problems that parents experience is when they run out of ideas and end up frustrated, out of control and with the child in charge. We live in a society governed by rules and consequences. We have a pretty good idea of what the consequences are if we choose to break the law. Consequences are clearly spelt out. They are pre-emptive. Most of us tend to parent reactively i.e. we react to our children rather than clearly spell out  the consequences before they make bad choices e.g. If they don’t want to pick up a toy left lying around means that they don’t want it and that it will be confiscated. Children, like adults do not enjoy being told what to do. The secret is knowing how to allow them to make choices as shown in the examples above.
Children are 100% dependent on their parent which means that you have all the power!  You’ve just got to know how to use it.
Parents are the main role players when it comes to helping children achieve their potential. It’s sad that none of us are ever going to know what our full potential is and the reason for this is that we’re brought up by parents who in most cases try their best, but who also are imperfect human beings who suffered the consequences of inadequate parenting. The good news is that we always have choice and as we reach adulthood and are scarred by inadequate, neglectful or inappropriate parenting, we can choose to blame our parents forever and stay stuck with all our complexes and feelings of inadequacy, or choose to move forward by seeking help and finding someone, be it a counsellor or any therapist who can help us grow, take responsibility for our choices and ultimately be in control of our life.

Language: 2 letter blends eg up at etc.
Welcome back to our last term together, we trust you enjoyed the break. . A busy and exciting term as we prepare the children for leaving us and going to Grade 1.  We also practice for Christmas Concerts and make presents and decorations.
Be prepared to hear your children singing Christmas carols and songs. We encourage you to join them and help them to learn the words.
Our EQ theme coping with unexpected changes is so apt for this term as the children do start to feel a little nervous and anxious about going to a new school. We will discuss this often and make it into an exciting event and adventure. It is normal for children to show concerns about going to a new school. This term we welcome Ethan Roman to our class. The children were told about him joining us and the boys are especially excited because we now have 10 boys. There are 13 girls so they are still out numbered.
When we went on the Silvermine walk we looked at tadpoles and the children were amazed that they change and grow into frogs. Our theme about amphibians related to physical changes and time to sequencing and changes during the day. Morning, afternoon, evening and night and the 12 hour clock. We will also discuss- days, months and a year. Seasons and compare them.
We have learned all the letters in the alphabet so will now start blending letters to make words and play phonics and auditory games.
Skills to focus on- tying shoelaces, writing name correctly from memory, identifying numerals from 1 -20 and getting dressed and packing my school bag independently- this encourages children to be responsible for their belongings.

SPARE CLOTHES
Please remember to pack in some spare clothes for your child each day, particularly the younger ones. The children often need to change for various reasons and it becomes a little tricky when there is nothing for them to wear!!!
FACEBOOK
We love sharing pictures from the school day. Teachers only put photos up on Facebook once a week. Any parent who does not want their child’s photos to appear on Facebook should let their teacher know. www.facebook.com/fhpps.

And on that note...

Haim Ginott, now deceased wrote two ground breaking books on parenting. The one was titled ‘Between Parent and Child’ and the other ‘Between Parent and Teenager. This wonderful verse was penned by him:

On Parenting

I have come to the frightening conclusion
I am the decisive element in the home
It is my personal approach that creates the climate
It is my daily mood that makes the weather
As a parent I possess tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous
I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration
I can humiliate or humour, hurt or heal
In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis
Will be escalated or de-escalated, and a child humanised or de-humanised

Regards, Paula
