Soldier On
1 Columbus Avenue, Pittsfield, MA.

In October 2013, Solider On developed a cultural and healing arts program: the Veterans Community Arts Initiative. This Initiative engages veterans in transition out of homelessness in the arts and cultural activities to promote healing and expand our veterans’ social and personal networks of support. Daily classes are held which include: hand-work (needlepoint, embroidery, crochet, knitting), the art of drawing, painting, and creative writing. In addition to the daily classes, there are monthly workshops and offsite visits to museums, theatres, and other cultural activities. Soldier On encourages non-stigmatizing community connections and expands veterans’ social and personal network of support that will ultimately increase their long term stability and capacity for self-care. Community connections include Williamstown Theatre Festival, Hilltown Community Development Corporation, The Norman Rockwell Museum, The Mount Edith Wharton’s Home, Shakespeare & Company, MASS MoCA, Barrington Stage, Jacob’s Pillow, Berkshire Museum, and the City of Pittsfield - Office of Cultural Development, including the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts. This exhibit will showcase some of the works created by the veterans in residence in Pittsfield and Leeds, Massachusetts.

The exhibit will be featured for one-night only during First Fridays Artswalk on Friday, October 7th, 5 to 8 pm, at the Veterans Transportation Center in the Intermodal Center. Light refreshments will be served.

Veteran artists from Soldier On include: Richard Beaudin, Gary Vernon Bolton, Mona Dudley, John Goodro, LouAnn Hazelwood, Don Jeffers, Dawn LeHouiller, Ray Voide, and Russell Wyatt.

The Berkshire Alzheimer’s Partnership presents Memories in the Making, a program of the Alzheimer’s Association, which arms memory-impaired individuals with new tools for expression when words fail. Through art therapy, individuals use canvas and brush to share their ideas, feelings and memories, ultimately bringing them a sense of accomplishment and renewed self-worth. Through the creative process of painting, these individuals speak to us, offering us the essence of themselves. And just as importantly, in viewing the art, families, caregivers, and the public are often touched by the tangible evidence of what remains of the individual even after the disease has robbed them of so much.

There will be an opening reception with light refreshments on Friday, October 7th, from 5 to 8 pm.
