Eurythmy Classes at HVS
Fridays 8:30-9:45am | HVS Eurythmy Room
Jong-Won Choi is offering eurythmy classes for parents and friends of HVS. Come and experience what our children are learning in school. Beginners to experienced are welcome. Classes are Fridays 8:30 - 9:45 AM in the HVS eurythmy room and will follow the HVS school calendar. Since we will be working on some pieces, continuous participation is important. Those who are interested but unsure of their commitment level are encouraged to try out a few classes. Please email Jong-Won Choi or Kelly Kristen, or phone Jong-Won at 518-821-9790 or Kelly at 646-714-1740 if interested. Thank you!
American Red Cross Blood Drive
Monday, October 24th | 1pm-6pm
School Assembly Hall

This October, Hawthorne Valley will once again be hosting the American Red Cross for a Blood Drive.  We urge parent, teachers, staff, and students age sixteen or older*, and the general public to stop by anytime during the afternoon to donate blood. Overall, last year’s drive was an encouraging success.  Particularly noteworthy were the students and adults who donated for the first time; American Red Cross experience shows that more than half of first-time donors become repeat donors.

Two very important steps to take in preparation for donating blood:
  1. Keep your iron level up; at last spring’s drive (and at every drive we have had over the years), low iron was the most common reason that potential donors could not give blood.  Eating foods high in iron and /or taking an iron supplement in the week preceding the drive helps a lot.
  2. Drink more water and eat more heartily than usual in the day before the blood drive.
For more information about the Blood Drive, please contact Bruce Frishkoff, 518-528-8735.

*Seventeen-year-olds may donate without parental permission; sixteen-year-olds need to have a parent signature on a Red Cross permission form.
Jack-O-Lantern Carving Party
October 30 | 1-3 pm

A call to all those creative in spirit! Help to light the magic of Halloween Night.... Come join us in carving pumpkins at the school hall on Sunday, October 30th from 1 pm- 3 pm. All pumpkins will be used for the HVS Halloween Celebration on Monday, October 31st.

Hawthorne Valley School is not responsible to return any Jack-O-Lanterns that are carved. All Jack-O-Lanterns will be on display during the Festival. Those who help carve may find their pumpkin and take it home at the end of the Festival if desired.
HVS Halloween Celebration
Monday, October 31 | 5:30 to 7:30 pm

A favorite festival at Hawthorne Valley is our Halloween celebration that is created for families with young children. Join us in costume for an evening of magic and mystery! Families are invited to follow the "Jack-O-Lantern" path to visit Baba Yaga, answer the riddles of the Forest Wizard, enjoy hot soup round the bonfire, visit the Fairies' Lollipop Garden and enjoy a puppet show! This year, the Magical Puppet Tree will perform "Witchamaroo and the Windy Night" - a humorous tale that tells of a teeny tiny witch and her adventures. Puppet Performances will be at 6:00 and 7:00 pm in the School Hall. Admission of $4 helps to fund the evening's festivities.
Camphill Village 5K and Fun Run
Saturday, November 5 | 9:00AM

Come and join Camphill Village at their casual run/walk around their beautiful village in Copake, NY. There will be a more competitive 5K trail run for more serious athletes.

Proceeds from the Camphill Village 5K and Fun Run will benefit the work of Camphill Village. To sign-up, go to www.camphillvillage5k.org.

Around The School

A special thank you to all the students, parents and faculty for their support of Hawthorne Valley's 22nd Annual Fall Festival. Despite the chilly, rainy weather, we welcomed a good turnout of people to our beautiful campus for a day of family, farm fun that helped strengthen community ties and introduce many people to the diverse initiatives offered at Hawthorne Valley. Thank you again!

Events at The Nature Institute
Expressing the Being of Animals – The Work of Franz Marc (1880 - 1916)
Wednesday, Oct 19, 7:30 pm
A talk with slides by Craig Holdrege at The Nature Institute. This presentation will honor the work of the painter Franz Marc and his intention to bring the being of animals to expression.  As Marc wrote: “How does a horse, or an eagle, or a deer, or a dog see the world?  How miserably soulless is our convention of placing animals in the landscape as we perceive it, rather than seeking to penetrate the soul of the animal so as to glean something of its own world of images.”  Franz Marc died one hundred years ago at the age of 36 in World War I.  Sliding scale $8 - $12

Volunteer Workday at The Nature Institute

Eurythmy at Mettabee Farm
The Soul Gestures with Karen Derreumaux
In our time, when we are often overwhelmed by information and mental activity, it is healing to immerse ourselves in the feeling aspect of the soul. Through color and movement Karen will explore with us certain of the eurythmy soul gestures--for example, reverence, fulfillment, hope, love and faith, on Wednesdays--October 5, 12 and 19 and November 2, 2,016 from 10:15 to 11:45 AM.  (December dates will be arranged later.)

There will be a sliding scale of $15-$30 per session.

Although full attendance is best, one may participate in as many sessions as one wishes.  Previous experience doing eurythmy is not necessary.
If you would like to attend, please contact Margaret Rosenthaler at 518-672-4253.
