Halloween Safety Tips
During the Halloween season it is important to keep your child's safety in mind when planning costumes, decorations, treats and activities. Make sure that Halloween is a safe and happy experience for the whole family by preparing ahead of time. Here are a few helpful tips to consider:
- Avoid danger when decorating: Stay vigilant for fire fire hazards and prevent injuries while getting into the spirit of Halloween. Remove objects around the outside that could cause children to trip or fall. Turn on your outdoor lights to increase visibility and let trick-or-treaters know they can visit.
- Plan a route in advance: Stick to paths that you and your child are familiar with to avoid getting lost.
- Stay well-lit: Apply reflective tape to your child's costume to ensure they are seen by drivers on the road. Also, carry a flashlight with you at all times.
- Make sure costumes are short: Long costumes that drag on the ground can be dangerous, especially at night. Hem anything that is too long to avoid tripping.
- Avoid masks: Masks can make it difficult for your child to see or breathe. If possible, skip the mask altogether and use non-toxic make-up to complete the costume instead.
- Be cautious with candy and toys: When sorting through candy at the end of the night, be sure to throw away candy that is not in its original wrapper, or looks as thought it has been opened. Check toys or novelty items for small parts and do not let children under three years of age play with them.
- Drive with extra caution on Halloween: Slow down and be alert in residential neighbourhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.

Leaf, Yard Waste & Branch Collection
Residents are reminded that yard waste, including leaves, are collected weekly year-round in all municipalities from single family homes and apartments with 2 to 6 units by the Niagara Region. As we approach the winter months and leaves fall at an excessive rate, please keep the following points in mind:
- There is no limit on the amount of yard waste bags you can put out for collection each week
- Place your yard waste in an acceptable compostable bag or container at the curb with your garbage, recycling and organics by 7 a.m. on your regular collection day
- Twigs and clippings must be no more than 1.5 cm (0.5 in). in diameter and 30.5 cm (12 in.) in length
- Please do not rake leaves onto the roadway, and keep catch basins clear of debris.
- Consider recycling your yard waste into rich mulch for your garden
Branch Collection:
- An extra week of branch collection has been added due to the anticipated early fall season. Fall branch collection will start October 24 and continue until November 25. Branch collection takes place on residents' regular garbage/recycling collection day during this time.
- In addition to curbside collection, branches and yard waste can also be dropped off by residents at one of the Region's landfills or residential waste and recycling drop-off depots for free.
- When setting out branches for collection it is important to remember:
- Branches must be tied in bundles
- Max. weight of bundle = 22.7 kg (50 lbs.)
- Max. size of bundle = 1.5 m (5 ft.) in length and 0.5 m (1.6 ft.) in diameter
- Individual branches inside of the bundle must not exceed 7 cm (2.8 in.) in diameter
- Branches must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on your designated collection day
For more information about Niagara Region's waste management services, including landfill / drop-off locations and hours of operation, call the Waste Info-Line at 905-356-4141 or 1-800-594-5542, or visit www.niagararegion.ca/waste.

Mastering Our Cemetery Gardens
The City would like to recognize one of our dedicated, talented and passionate employees, Barb Johnston. As a Master Gardener, Barb has made it her personal and professional mission to improve the quality, condition and design of all of our gardens; and she has succeeded with flying colours.
Barb designed and installed new gardens for the Morrison Street entrance at Fairview Cemetery, redesigned and developed most of the gardens in Fairview and has a vision to improve cemetery gardens, both in beauty, and efficiency (i.e. moisture retention, hardy plant species, etc.).
In a drought laden summer, Barb has ensured our gardens survived, and also went the extra mile to develop a more efficient watering system.
Thank you Barb for enhancing the beautification of our City and cemeteries!
