Ice Tots is coming back!

icetots2

The Winston Heights Mountview Community Association is bringing back Ice Tots this season!

Ice Tots is a learn to skate program for 3-5 year olds taught in a group format. Each child must be accompanied on the ice by an adult. (The adult should wear skates or non-slip footwear on the ice.)

Brittany Jones, a very qualified skating instructor with coaching and first aid certification will again teach our program, which will consist of 8 weekly 45 minute classes starting January 7th at the community rink. We will hold one set of classes at 10:00 a.m. and another at 11:00 a.m. We can take up to 10 adult/child pairs in each.

Because the  Community Association will again underwrite the costs of the program, we can offer it free of charge to  Community Association members and for a nominal cost of $20.00 for non-members. Similar indoor programs cost around $70.00/child.  To become a member please follow this link: membership

Preregistration is required and children must have skates and a CSA helmet. If you and your child wish to participate, please register here: ICE TOTS

Update: October 2016

We have had a skating/shinny rink and oval for many years on the field at the community centre. This winter we are planning some exciting things for the rink.

The boards are up and ready to go, now we just wait for the mercury to drop. The Rinks committee is always on the lookout for new volunteers to help keep our rink in tip top shape! Teams of “hosers” (someone who waters or hoses rinks) need to be assembled to ensure the rink is maintained on a consistent basis. For the last couple of years Dave has done an amazing job, but sadly, he has moved to sunnier climes. We have a large “fire” hose and nozzle for watering the surfaces. We have snow blowers and power-brooms to make the job of clearing the ice surface easier. We are always in need of gently-used items for our Tuesday night community skates, as well. Please contact JF Gagnon at rinks@winstonheights.ca if you can help. Remember, the rink is only a realization with help from people like you who volunteer their time.

Keep watching the website and the newsletter for information on Ice Tots registration dates and special community events. And keep warm out there!
Little Free Library

We are so pleased to see that our Little Free Library at the WHM community hall is so well-loved and so frequently visited. It is so well-loved, in fact, that we are fresh out of books for visitors to borrow. If you have any children’s books that you would be willing to donate to our Little Free Library we would be very appreciative! Please just pop them in our LFL outside the community hall at 520 – 27 Ave NE. Thanks and happy reading!

Treasurer Wanted!
Our dedicated, long-time volunteer, Don Phillips, is planning to step down from his role as Treasurer at the end of his term. The WHMCA is sad to see Don retire from his role, but is now in search of a community member who might be interested in exploring the Treasurer position on the board. We would invite anyone interested to come join the WHMCA Finance Committee and learn more about what the Community Association is all about. The Finance Committee is always looking for members, so if you have an affinity for numbers, talents in the area of accounting, or strengths that would benefit the WHMCA, please contact volunteer@winstonheights.ca or visit us at winstonheights.ca for more information.
We are hiring!

WHMCA is looking to hire casual Relief Hall Staff.  The main priorities of Relief Hall Staff would be to clean and prepare the hall for renters.  The time commitment would be two days every other weekend and two weeks in the summer - this role would be great for a retiree, student, or newcomer to Canada!  We would also be interested in somebody for the immediate short term, if you are not interested in long term work.  Please call Caleigh Hanks at 403.589.6828 (no resume needed) or e-mail a resume to caleighjdh@gmail.com to apply.

Visit Relief Hall Staff for description.
We have been looking for you!

The Winston Heights-Mountview Board of Directors is looking for new Board members! This is a great way to get involved as a community leader and bring your ideas to the table. The current Board is a dynamic (and fun!) group that is a mix of established residents and those newer to the community. Meetings are held at Winston Heights-Mountview Community Centre Board Room on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. (please check website to confirm).

For more information, please contact Christine at president@winstonheights.ca.
Update from WHMRR - Syrian Refugee Assistance

Exciting Update from the Winston Heights-Mountview Refugee Response!

The WHMRR now has an official date for our family of five that is arriving from Syria! They will be here on November 14 which means we have our work cut out for us. We are looking for support in the following ways:

Rental Unit: We are looking for a rental unit with at least three bedrooms that is in our budget and price range where the family can afford to live for years to come ($1400 or less including utilities). The preference is a unit near reliable and regular transit and a walking distance to a grocery store as well as other services. Please contact Caleigh.Rabbitte@gmail.com if you know of something suitable. We will need a space by early November.

In kind donations: We still need the following items (in good condition).

Kitchen: Measuring cups and spoons, mixer, kitchen cloths, serving tray, garbage bin

Dining room: placemats/cloths, potholders

Living room: Chairs, entertainment unit, coffee table

Home office: telephone, pens, pencils, stapler, organizers

Bedrooms: space heater, dressers, bedside tables

Bathroom: bathmat, wastebasket

Clothing (parents and 3 boys ages 14-18): Shirts, Sweaters, Pants, Socks, Hats, Mittens, Shoes, Boots, Umbrellas

Misc.: Ironing board, laundry baskets, laundry hamper, broom and dust pan, mops, cleaning supplies

Gift cards: Grocery cards would be fantastic and always useful, but we would love to be able to provide the family with some freedom in terms of their clothing choices with gift cards as well. We were all teenagers once and we want to give the entire family some autonomy, if at all possible.

Please contact us at whmrrdonate@gmail.com if you have anything to donate! This list is not exclusive!

Setting up: If you want to help but can't donate, we are going to need a LOT of help setting up their home and accepting donations there!  Please contact us at whmrrvolunteer@gmail.com to volunteer with setting up their home from November 1-13. We will need everything from people to haul furniture from its current storage location, to folding dishtowels!

We invite everybody to check our Facebook Page or our website at:https://whmrefugeeresponse.wordpress.com/

We will provide regular updates there, as well as our plans to greet the family when they arrive (we do not have an arrival time as of yet). We are so excited that this community has been and will continue to be a part of this amazing journey. Thank-you for all of your support.

With gratitude, the Winston Heights-Mountview Refugee Response

Playgroup!

playgroup info 6x3625

Are you a mom, dad, grandparent or caregiver in the neighbourhood and would like to have a place to go to meet other people and have your children socialize and play with others? Then come and join us at the Winston Heights-Mountview Playgroup held at the Winston Heights-Mountview Community Centre. We have great toys for the kids to play with and this is a great way to get out and meet others. Playgroup is held each Monday morning starting at 10:00 a.m. and lasts to 11:30 a.m.

This is an informal, non-registered playgroup, so no need to sign up, just come out and join us on Monday mornings - we love to meet new families in the neighbourhood! If you have any questions, or would like more information, please contact Sarah Wiedmer Jarabak at playgroup@winstonheights.ca.

Also, if you'd be interested in having a 'story time' during playgroup, please contact me via e-mail. If we have enough interest, I will organize a Calgary Public Library public outreach coordinator to schedule us in for regular story times. They bring books on a specific theme and read a few to the children while guardians quietly visit. The books are even available to be checked out if you bring your library card with you.
POTLUCK!

potluck logo

The third Friday of every month at 6pm, the WHMCA hosts a family-friendly pot luck dinner. All community residents are welcome to attend. Bring a dish to share and anything special you might like to drink (coffee, tea, juice and water are provided) and come on out to meet your neighbours for some great food and ever better company and conversation. There are toys and activities for children and it's a great opportunity to meet new neighbours and friends. If you’ve not yet made it out to the potluck but would like to attend, please come by.

If you want more information, please contact Darla at potluck@winstonheights.ca. To sign up for the Potluck notices that include details of this month's event(s), please use the eNewsletter sign up at the side of the page and select 'Potluck'.

She is going to try and get us one for the Oct. meeting to get us started on a read for Nov. Subsequent meetings will be held on the first Friday of the month, 10 am -noon.  You are absolutely welcome in joining us and inviting anyone else that you think might be interested!

While Act III is sponsoring, it is open to anyone. Interested in more information, email actiii@winstonheights.ca or phone Myrna 403-283-8391.

WHMCA Community Garden
While the growing season is over, you will notice that some gardens still contain root vegetables. Carrots can stay in the ground long after the temperature drops below zero. Leaving them in the ground is one of the best ways to store them. They haven’t been forgotten, their grower is just trying to make summer last as long as possible.

Although winter is on the way, the garden is still a great place to walk. Visitors can enjoy our Little Free Library all year long. Its part of a network of 40,000 libraries worldwide and you can find us on the official map at littlefreelibraries.org. Everyone is welcome to borrow or donate a book anytime.

Finally, farewell to Freddie the Frog. Fred is being retired from his on again/off again stint as our garden mascot. Although he’ll be missed by many, there’s comfort in knowing that our green guardian is going to a good home where he will continue to commune with birds, bunnies, and cats.

Gardeners who would like to reserve or renew their bed for next year can contact the garden committee at communitygarden@winstonheights.c

Council News

Hello Winston Heights-Mountview Neighbours!

Getting involved in your community is an incredible way to give back to our city and those who may be in experiencing hardship.

To those who are already involved in active volunteerism, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of you.

Another way for Winston Heights-Mountview residents to get involved in community building is to participate in the Ward 9 Community Objectives Workshop (COW). I know that I have spoken on this topic in several newsletter articles over the course of 2016 but I wanted to give an update specific to Winston Heights-Mountview.

The original date that was selected for the Winston Heights-Mountview/Tuxedo Park COW had to be changed. The Green Line team is hosting a four-day intensive workshop on Transit Oriented Development for the northern stations of 9 Avenue, 16 Avenue and 28 Avenue, which conflicts with the date we selected.  Saturday, October 1 is the day that the solutions to each station identified in the workshop will be presented to the public – and we know a lot our WHMV neighbours will be eager to see what the planning teams have come up with!

As a result, we have decided to postpone the Community Objectives Workshop for Winston Height-Mountview/Tuxedo Park to Saturday, November 5.  You can find more information at www.gccarra.ca/cows-submission or call our office at 403-268-5330.

Finally, as fall is now in full swing, I wanted to remind everyone that The City is offering its Leaf & Pumpkin Composting Program, again, this year. This is a chance for all of us to divert waste from our landfills and reduce greenhouse gasses by composting yard waste. More information can be found at www.calgary.ca.

Happy fall!
Yours,
Gian-Carlo
