A Message from Our Assistant Principal

Alameda Families,
Welcome to a wet and rainy season here in Oregon.  I hope everyone is enjoying the wet weather.  We have still been going outside as often as possible and there have been lots of jackets left on the playground after recess.  Please stop by the lost and found when you have a chance to locate any lost items.

We had a beautiful day for Run for the Arts and the students all put their hearts (and their legs) into the day.  Thank you so much parents for all your work with organizing and cheering our kids on.  It was a highlight of my week.  The money and forms are due back to your child’s teacher by October 28th.  Thank you for all your dedication to keeping the arts alive at Alameda.  We will be enjoying a dance performance by Rainbow Dance Company coming up on October 28th and it is these types of extra activities that your funds go towards.

Just a reminder that there will be an Alameda Parent Equity meeting on Monday October 24th at 9:00 AM for those parents interested in supporting and forming a parent equity group.  Today in our late opening the Grant High School student equity team came to talk to our staff about the work that they have been doing at Grant around racial equity.  They made a powerful video and created some wonderful lessons for Grant students and teachers about racial equity.  You can see that here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0bqDXbJwgg

We were moved by the student’s words and shared experiences and appreciate the time they took to come talk to our staff.  It validates our belief the importance of having cultural awareness and knowledge and to support our students here at Alameda through our racial equity work.  Please join us for more conversations on Monday October 24th.

Reminders:

Parents, when sending a new person to pick up your child, please have them present I.D.  We want to make sure we are keeping your children safe and we apologize if it is an inconvenience, but we need to make sure that we send your child home to the right person.

Conferences are coming up.  At TAG night Raddy and I spoke about questions that are great to ask at conferences to learn more about your child’s learning in class.  Here they are:
  • What can you tell me about my child’s rate and level of learning?
  • How does my child demonstrate learning expectations?
  • Do you use pre/post assessments?
  • What opportunities will my child be given to learn with other students who have similar rates and levels of learning?
  • How will you communicate the strategies used to address my child’s rate and level of learning?

Enjoy the rainy weather.
Best,
Eryn Berg

Rigler-Alameda Sister School Partnership

By Nancy Goff

Did you know that Alameda now has a Sister School? We are partnering with Rigler Elementary, which is less than 2 miles down the road, to bridge some of the cultural and resource gaps between our schools before our kids enter middle school together at Beaumont.

Since this is our inaugural year, we’re focusing on a few activities that have a high likelihood of success-- collaborative art projects, pen pals and books. You can learn more about the Partnership on Alameda’s website. All are welcome to join us!

A Heartfelt Thank You from Darlene!

By Darlene West

A heartfelt thank you to the volunteers Erin Momola, Nikki Lee and Erica Lewis who laminated 100’s of lunch cards for our students! We would not have had time to do it ourselves and the lunch cards would not have lasted long without a little plastic reinforcement.

Food Waste Volunteers Needed

Can you spare a little time mid-day to help curb Food Waste at Alameda? Volunteers are needed to monitor and remind students to separate their food waste at lunch time. If you can help, please sign up for one of the available volunteer spots:  http://www.signupgenius.com/index.cfm?go=s.signup&urlid=60b084caeab22a02-organics&view=standard

The Field Improvement Project Update & Call for Volunteers

By Dana Peterson and Aimee Samuelson

The field has now been aerated and reseeded and we hope to see significant improvement by Thanksgiving. To make that happen we need everyone’s help. We are asking the community to stay off the field and to keep dogs off the field. This will provide the best chance for germination and growth. Thank you, in advance, for your help!

In addition to these immediate repairs, we are working hard on long term plans to improve the field. If you are interested in helping out please contact Aimee Samuelson or Dana Peterson via www.alamedafield.org.

Immediate volunteer needs include:
  • Grant Writing
  • Finance Management
  • Webpage Maintenance
