Finance for the Not-For-Profit Sector

Workshop Wednesdays is a new joint initiative between AOE Arts Council and the Ottawa Arts Council to offer informative and interactive workshops to local artists and arts organizations across the Ottawa region. For the first workshop in the series, we are co-presenting 'Finance for the Not-For-Profit Sector' with Ottawa Festivals

Improve your understanding of not-for-profit finance reporting and decision making!  This workshop will be of interest to those involved in managing their finances or overseeing the finance department as well as those involved in the finance role. 

Date: Wednesday, November 9, 2016
Time: 4:30pm – 7:30pm
Location: Richelieu-Vanier Community Centre, Workshop #1, 300 Pères-Blancs Ave, Ottawa
Fee: $20 AOE Arts Council, Ottawa Arts Council, and Ottawa Festivals members
$30 Non Members

4:30 pm: Arrival, registration and hospitality                      

4:45 – 6:45 pm Part 1 - Finance:
Topics will include:

  • Understanding the types of financial statements
  • Financial policies, roles and responsibilities and internal controls
  • Responsibilities of the finance and audit committee(s)
  • Budgets:  strategic planning and budget analysis; managing budgets effectively and making budget decisions; cash flow analysis; cash versus accrual; depreciation
  • Audit Preparation
  • GST/HST – tax planning opportunities to save tax dollars

 
6:45 - 7:30 pm Part 2 - SEF:
Ottawa Festivals Sustainability and Emergency Fund (SEF) presentation:  Created in 2007, SEF is a component of an overall strategy to bring greater stability to the festival, special event and fair industry and administered by Ottawa Festivals and The Crawford Group.  SEF assists participating members with their ongoing cyclical cash-flow needs, provides a source of emergency funding when unforeseen events create a significant financial loss, and provides a worthwhile alternative to your investment needs.  Join Ottawa Festivals’ Board Treasurer, Janet Sellwood, along with David Crawford of The Crawford Group as they highlight the plan details and share how members can benefit from this program.
