New NZOIA Board Members

At the AGM on 2 October, Ben Corcoran and Jo Martindale were elected to the NZOIA Board for a term of 3 years. They will be straight into it, with the Board meeting taking place next Friday. We look forward to working with them and tapping into their expertise!

We would also like to acknowledge and thank outgoing board members Jo Parsons and Dave Ritchie who both have contributed greatly to NZOIA. Jo has been on the board for 8 years and has been part of big changes over the last decade and involved with many projects and initiatives. We will miss Jo's depth of knowledge and connections in the outdoor industry. Dave completed a 3 year term and thank him for his ‘Big Picture’ outlook, thinking outside the square and searching for new opportunities. As both are still members of NZOIA, we continue to look forward to their input and advise!

Antarctic Heritage Trust Inspiring Explorers Expedition applications open

Applications are now open for the Antarctic Heritage Trust’s Inspiring Explorers Expedition 2017. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for up to four young New Zealanders to participate in a heavily sponsored expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula in February 2017. Weather and conditions permitting, the team will attempt a guided ascent of Mt Scott. The expedition aims to encourage young people both to explore the physical world to educate and inspire them, as well as to challenge those participating to inspire others to explore.

More information and applications are at https://www.nzaht.org/pages/inspiring-explorers-2017

Let's Celebrate!

New NZOIA Staff Member!

With a signed contract now in hand, we are excited to announce we have employed Pip Russell as the Assessment and Membership Coordinator at the NZOIA office!

Pip studied at NMIT and Aoraki Polytechnic and has worked in the outdoors for a number of years, including at Outward Bound, World Challenge and a year long stint in Antarctica. Many of you will know Pip and she will slip in seamlessly. Pip will be doing the odd week here and there and will start officially at the end of the year.

We are sad to be losing Shona McInnes who has been with NZOIA almost 3 years and has contributed a lot to NZOIA through her work. We really appreciate that Shona has stayed on to assist in transition to Pip.

FAQ

Q:  How can outstanding Outdoors people be acknowledged for the work they do?

A:  There are many Kiwis who have contributed to the advancement of others or are themselves outstanding people who deserve to be recognised. The New Zealand Royal Honours System is a way of recognising New Zealanders who have served their community and/or country, and those who have achieved, and Sport NZ (and us at NZOIA) encourage you to nominate a worthy recipient for a Queen’s Birthday Honour.

Outdoors people are often modest in nature. It's time we celebrated and recognised these people alongside other greats in New Zealand!

Further information and nomination forms can be found here. Nominations must be submitted by 24 December 2016.

Well done if you've read all the way to here! Phew that was a big 4YA and I even had to miss a few things out!

I'm back to work after a good couple of weeks holiday in Samoa and a very busy, but enjoyable Symposium! Thanks again to Hillary Outdoors for hosting us. Straight back into it, with a board meeting next week and loads of emails to sort through...just as well there is a long weekend to ease back into it! Enjoy the long weekend.
