IN THE NEWS

RECREATION MATTERS!

Effective immediately, the province has cut the Partners in Leisure Program by 5.5% and cancelled training allocations of $600 a year. This is of great concern to communities who depend on this funding to provide essential recreation programs, services and facilities to Manitoba residents.

Recreation professionals throughout the province provide a wide variety of programs and services to all ages throughout our communities, and most times with very little funds.  We provide a better quality of life through these programs and services, and we save the government money through health prevention as it has been proven many times over that a healthy and happy person is much less likely to require health care services.  We help to create attractive communities where people want to live, work and play, and we have done so with limited funds even before these cuts.

While we realize that the provincial government is working diligently to balance the budget, a small investment in recreation can mean SO MUCH for our community and communities across Manitoba.  Recreation commission and professionals have written letters, spoken to the local elected officials and their MLA’s and used social media with the message that RECREATION MATTERS!!

Federal, Provincial, and Territorial Governments Seeking Input to Inform a Framework for Physical Activity

Ottawa, October 20, 2016—Federal, provincial, and territorial governments (excluding Quebec) want to hear from parents, professionals, businesses, NGOs, and other Canadians, as they embark on a process to develop a physical activity framework.  Research clearly shows that inactivity and sedentary behaviour remain a critical public health issue among Canadians of all ages. Together with other sectors of society, federal, provincial, and territorial (FPT) Ministers responsible for sport, physical activity, and recreation (SPAR) are working to address this disturbing trend by developing a physical activity framework.

The framework will complement other existing government and community-led policies and programs—such as Active Canada 20/20: A Physical Activity Strategy & Change Agenda for Canada, the Canadian Sport Policy, and the Framework for Recreation in Canada 2015: Pathways to Well-Being, among others, and will also consider new and emerging policy approaches. The framework will be completed for endorsement by federal, provincial, and territorial SPAR Ministers in July 2017.

Federal, provincial, and territorial governments have asked The Conference Board of Canada to assist in engaging Canadians and key stakeholders in health, physical activity and sedentary behaviour, sport, and recreation, as well as other relevant disciplines and sectors, to inform the development of the framework. This consultation process will help inform the direction, objectives, priorities, scope, and a plan for performance measurement and evaluation.

The first stage in the consultation process is a survey for completion by the general public, all levels of government, and all relevant sectors of society.
Please complete the online survey by November 11, 2016, and share with others who would like to have a voice in the consultation process.
