Congratulations to the ReStart September
Student of the Month, Fernanda Macias!

Fernanda was nominated for student of the month by
three of her teachers. She has shown respect, hard work
and determination to finish and earn her degree in a set time. Fernanda's grades and behavior are a great
example for every student at KEC. She is a credit to
both her home school, RTHS, and KEC.
KEC's Science Department has BIG NEWS!

Fall is the time of abundance and this has never been more true for the KEC Science Department.  During the month of September we have received several donations that will be crucial to our department.

  1. We received full funding for a Donor’s Choose Dissection Project through several donors and a large donation from 3M gives to Dekalb.

  2. We received a generous donation from a student’s family to help with performing hands-on experiments.

  3. We received another donation from Berna Popenhagen for Carolina Biological through her work with Skills Competition.

Mrs. Chevy is overwhelmed by the generosity of others to give to our students.  Our students love to complete hands-on activities and they know how difficult it is to obtain supplies.

Thanks to these generous donations, Mrs. Chevy’s Science class will be performing a full frog dissection on Monday, October 24th during classes.

Keep looking for upcoming projects and
    photos and THANKS FOR SHARING
    AND SUPPORTING KEC Science.

Congratulations to KEC's
September Project of the Month Winner,
Mr. Escamilla and the KEC Games!
Mr. Escamilla is always looking for new and exciting ways to improve student attendance. This year, he is hosting the KEC Games, in which mentor groups battle each other in attendance, grades, and games on a weekly basis.
KEC's Fall Fun Festival
KEC's ReStart Students enjoyed a day outside last Friday, for Fall Fun Festival! Mentor groups competed against each other in volleyball, football, walk the plank and tug-o-war.
Take 5
Take 5 with…Mrs. Sherman

If you’re familiar with KEC, then you’re probably familiar with
Mrs. Sherman. KEC was fortunate enough to have Mrs. Sherman as a teacher from 2001 – 2014. Then in 2013, Mrs. Sherman joined the staff once again and has been teaching English and science, as well as leading the way for our mentoring groups, ever since.
Dig in and find out what else rocks Mrs. Sherman’s world:
  • Mrs. Sherman is a huge pizza fan. Her favorite pizza is homemade…thin crust with pepperoni, mushrooms, and onions. But really, just about any type of pizza from anywhere will do!

  • Her favorite childhood memory is of Christmas each year. She always has a good time.

  • If Mrs. Sherman was an animal, she would be a cat. They have it made because they get to sleep all the time! Just ask her two cats at home: Jinx and Jesse.

  • Where, exactly, is Mrs. Sherman’s happy place? It changes periodically…vacations past, archeology, being at home…just depends on where her mind takes her that day.

  • The best advice that Mrs. Sherman ever received was from our own executive director, Mr. Crouch. He told her that she doesn’t need to be her students’ friends. They have friends; she just needs to be their teacher.
Take 5 with…Mr. Martin

Mr. Martin joined KEC in the spring of 2014.  Ever since that time, he’s been sharing his wealth of knowledge in social studies, literature, and US history with countless KEC students. With degrees in English and History, we know those subjects are in Mr. Martin’s wheelhouse. But, those aren’t the only things that make Mr. Martin’s world go round:
  • The last vacation Mr. Martin took was this summer when he traveled to England. It was his first time out of the country.
He loved spending time in Scotland and in London, marveling
at how some of the bathrooms he was in were actually
    older than America.

  • Mr. Martin would rather “read the book” than “see the movie” any day. So, what’s his favorite book? There are just too many to list.

  • In fifth grade, Mr. Martin dreamed of being a football player when he grew up. His coaches talked him out of it for some very valid reasons; Mr. Martin was the slowest player on the team and also the player who just talked too darn much.

  • Which 3 people (living or dead) would Mr. Martin have dinner with if given the opportunity? That’s easy: Karl Marx, The Notorious B.I.G., and Geoffrey Chaucer.

  • And, dying with no legacy…that’s the one thing that
    scares Mr. Martin the most.
