Welcome to Be That Neighbor, The Yalecrest Neighborhood Councils’ new monthly feature for sharing ideas, actions and policies aimed at helping to maintain and enhance a great Yalecrest neighborhood.
BE THAT NEIGHBOR
So, what does it mean to Be That Yalecrest Neighbor?
It simply means extending kindness, courtesy and civil consideration for people who are nearby – they are your neighbors. Most likely, being that Yalecrest neighbor is already a part of your daily life. In fact if you have ever lent a tool or a cup of sugar, helped a neighbor who is having car trouble, shared fresh food from your garden, joined in with others to shovel your block, or if you regularly say “Hi – How are you doing?” when you are out walking the Yalecrest Neighborhood, you are being that neighbor.
In Yalecrest, being that neighbor means helping assure our neighborhood will continue to be a safe, healthy and welcoming place. Because we enjoy the benefit of being one of Salt Lake City’s most walkable neighborhoods, it means that people and family members - including dogs, of all ages and abilities are out and about taking daily walks. And because walking is such a highly enjoyed past time for many residents, committing to safely sharing sidewalk and trail space continues to be important for everyone.
 To Be That Neighbor who makes walking for people and dogs a friendly and safe experience, make sure you know these tips before heading out the door:
Leash Up, Secure I.D. Tags + Grab Poop & Scoop Bag
In all public areas, The YNC follows the Salt Lake City ordinance requiring dogs on-leash at all times . Currently, The Yalecrest does not have any dog off-leash park areas.
Keep Them Close -Speeding Drivers Everywhere
Dangerous for both off leash dogs and their owners are the frequent number of high speed and distracted drivers in our area. Because Yalecrest roads have a high number of commuting drivers, and because of our unusually wide roads, drivers commonly exceed posted speed limits. To keep your dog safe and away from dangerous roads, always leash up before you head out the door.
Space for All Ages and Abilities
Dogs and people come in all ages and abilities. Your dog may have the best of manners, but for health, comfort and safety reasons, not everyone – including other dogs, can be near each other. An off leash dog may attract the attention of an on leash dog leading to tugging and pulling causing balance or other challenges for the attached person. S please, when walking with your dog, be that friendly neighbor who puts courtesy and safety at the forefront, dogs on leash is best for Yalecrest.

TAKE CARE AND BE AWARE...
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Why does living in the Yalecrest Neighborhood help women and men live a more breast cancer preventative life?
The Yalecrest neighborhood is one of the many Salt Lake City walkable and safe neighborhoods, and living in this area means enjoying the opportunity to get out and walk your way toward reducing breast cancer risk. The National Breast Cancer Foundation shares that moderate exercise helps boosts the immune system and keep weight in check, this helps lower a woman’s risk of breast cancer.
They go on to say, With as little as three hours of exercise per week, or about 30 minutes a day, a woman can begin to lower her risk of breast cancer. This doesn’t require going to a gym either. Power walking is more than sufficient!
So get out and enjoy a vigorous Yalecrest Neighborhood walk, meet friendly folks along the way and kick up your heals to healthy living in a great neighborhood.

National Fire Safety Month
Know this - Three of every five home fire deaths in U.S. homes are with out working or no smoke alarms. In fact, National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) research shows that only a small number of people really know how often smoke alarms need to be changed because they are too old to work effectively. www.fpw.org
Key NFPA recommendations:
Smoke alarms Should be Replaced every 10 years
“Hear the Beep Where You Sleep” -Make sure all bedrooms have smoke alarms
Test Your Smoke Alarms Every Month
Know how Old All the Smoke Alarms are in your Home - Look at Manufacture Date on the Back of the Alarm; Replace 10 years from that Date

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS
The Salt Lake City Police Department and Yalecrest Neighborhood Council encourage a safe and enjoyable with these safety tips.
Safety at Home
- Turn on exterior home lights for trick or treaters
- Keep walkways free of obstructions
- Do NOT allow anyone into your home you don't know
Trick-or-Treating
- Plan a route that will be followed
- CROSS STREETS AT INTERSECTIONS, never mid-block or between parked cars
- WALK ON SIDEWALKS
- Provide children with a functioning flashlight or glow stick
- Instruct children not to enter strange cars or homes
- Avoid trick-or-treating in areas and at homes you are not familiar with
Costume Safety
- Chose bright colored costumes. If dark costumes are selected, affix reflective tape to increase visibility.
- Consider using make-up rather than a mask. Masks reduce peripheral vision and present a hazard to children wearing them.
- If masks are used, cut eyeholes large enough to provide improved vision.
- On the inside of the costume affix the child’s name, address and phone number in case of an accident or a lost child
