Promoting Effective Water Management
CWRA is a national organization of individuals and organizations from the public, private and academic sectors that are committed to raise awareness of the value of water and to promote responsible and effective water resource management in Canada.

A fantastic shot of a participant taken during the Edmonton SYP Chapter “Mighty North Saskatchewan Canoe Adventure.” Want to know more about this chapter and other fantastic networking groups for water-minded students and young professionals in Canada? Check out the SYP Edmonton Twitter feed and Water Canada's Jessica Neal and her blog that talks about CWRA SYPs and other great organizations. SYPs are the future of the CWRA!

President's Message

Across Canada CWRA activities are firing up and water partnerships and collaboration is happening.  We are busy coordinating our January 2017 workshop in Ottawa with series of speakers and panels to focus our attention on national water issues. The Federal Government is stepping forward in partnership and exciting things are happening.  Across the country CWRA Branches are collaborating. BC Branch is partnering with the Fraser Basin Council on Lower Mainland Flood strategies, see the article attached on Lake Winnipeg ideas moving forward, Ontario Branch is focused on stormwater tools and green infrastructure.  In the east New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have plans in the works for some water events.  Please keep your eyes open for some exciting events planned for your area.

Raven Workshop Summary

A Raven hydrologic modelling workshop, co-sponsored by the CWRA, CSHS, and Carleton University Geography department, was held in Ottawa this October 14th at Carleton University, and instructed by Prof. James Craig from the University of Waterloo. Eleven  attendees from academia, government, and consulting participated. The day started with an discussion of the challenges to trustworthy model development, covered the basics of modelling with the flexible Raven hydrologic modelling framework, and ended with hands-on watershed model development exercises. Plenty of interesting questions were asked and participants enjoyed the stimulating discussions both at the breaks and during post-workshop drinks at the Carleton student centre. Plans are underway to offer the Raven workshop at the CWRA conference in Lethbridge in June 2017. For more information about the Raven modelling framework, or for future Raven workshops, go to http://www.civil.uwaterloo.ca/jrcraig/Raven/Main.html

In partnership with CSHS, CWRA presents this important webinar. The University of Saskatchewan’s Global Water Futures overarching goal is to deliver risk management solutions—informed by leading-edge water science and supported by innovative decision-making tools—to manage water futures in Canada and other cold regions where global warming is changing landscapes, ecosystems, and the water environment.

The information in this webinar is presented by Howard Wheater, Canada Excellence Research Chair in Water Security and director of the University of Saskatchewan Global Institute for Water Security, who leads the CFREF-funded program. “No institution nationally or internationally has assembled such a large-scale and multi-disciplinary water research initiative of this kind,” said Wheater.

Welcome our new CWRA New Brunswick Branch President Anne Marie LaRoche

Anne-Marie has completed her Ph.D. in 2000 in soil sciences at Université Laval. Afterward, she had the opportunity to be a commissioner for the BAPE (Bureau d’audiences publiques sur l’environnement) for a road construction in Hull, Québec. She went to the Ministère de l’environnement (Québec) as an engineer and worked on projects related to water contamination problems in agricultural areas. Now, she is an associate professor of civil engineering at Université de Moncton and teaches courses in water and wastewater treatment and environment. She also worked on research projects on inland floodplain mapping, on climate change and hydrology, to name a few. Over time, Anne-Marie has developed expertise in GIS applications of water management at the watershed scale. In her free time, she likes to take her bicycle to explore the countryside.

The 2017 Conference will explore how water has been exploited, managed, protected, and shared as it crosses jurisdictional boundaries in North America. The program will address the best (and worst) approaches and solutions to interjurisdictional water management on the continent, with a view to influencing future public policy.
When submitting an abstract, you will be requested to indicate your choice of theme and sub-theme, and to specify your preference for either an oral or a poster presentation, or a Pecha Kucha style concise presentation.   Abstract submission takes place between October 15, 2016 and January 15, 2017.

The Bow River Basin Council

In the latest issue of WATER NEWS the challenges faced by the Bow River Basin Council are discussed. The need for and provision of clean abundant water brings this community together, provides food for their tables, energy for their homes, and opportunities for recreation. In Alberta, 33% of the population relies directly on the waters of the Bow River Basin. This represents over 1.3 million people and is increasing. Yet the Bow River Basin represents only 4% of Alberta’s landmass and 3% of its surface water supply... Go to the CWRA homepage and click the Water News link for the full article.
