Who is an example of a pioneer in female hockey?

With the Glenwood Ice Arena just one block from her house, Yevet Anderson spent her teenage years walking to the home of the Erie (Pennsylvania) Lions.

Anderson hung out at the rink after school since it was a safe place to be while her mother was away. The players on the semi-pro hockey team became father figures to the young girl.

“The Erie Lions, these guys took me in,” Anderson said. “They took me to father-daughter stuff, school dances, because my mom couldn’t do it.”

If local kids shoveled the team’s ice rink, they got to skate for free. So as a 13-year-old, Anderson was shoveling on a regular basis. That led to bigger and better opportunities at the rink.

“They got me involved because I could skate,” Anderson said. “They got me helping with kids. It was an [American Development Model] program back then, but it wasn’t called ADM.”

Now, 50 years later, Anderson’s career of coaching and developing youth and amateur hockey programs is slowing down. Last September, Anderson hit the magic milestone of a half-century of dedication to the sport she loves and helped develop.

“Has the female program advanced a tremendous amount? Yes, it has,” said Karen Lundgren, former chair for USA Hockey’s girls/women’s division. “Yevet was an integral part of helping that by just doing what she did for all the years she did it.”
