HANDCRAFTED ORIGINALS EXHIBIT
Don’t forget to vote for your personal favorite in the exhibit this year.  We will award a Viewer’s Choice Award at the end of the exhibit on October 31.
Building Blocks Grant
The Stevens County Library has been awarded a Building Blocks Grant from the Russell Child Development Center in Garden City, Kansas.

The Building Blocks Library Grant program focuses on providing support for public libraries that embrace the concepts of Family Place Libraries ™.  Family Place Libraries build upon the knowledge that good health, early learning, parental involvement and supportive communities play a critical role in young children’s growth and potential.  A fundamental concept of the Family Place program is the understanding that play fosters early learning and development in young children.

The Stevens County Library‘s grant will be used to purchase imaginative and creative play items to enhance the library experience for children ages 0-6. “We believe that by exposing young library users to more creative and inventive play, children will learn a love of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities and develop an active imagination” says Stacey Strickland, Assistant Director and Youth Services Coordinator at the Stevens County Library.  Educational and imaginative play items are located in the Children’s Area of the Stevens County Library and are available for use inside the library.

This grant is funded by a Building Blocks Early Childhood Block Grant awarded by the Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund to Russell Child Development Center.  Russell Child Development Center (RCDC) is a community based not-for-profit early childhood agency which administered several programs for southwest Kansas including Building Blocks Early Childhood Block Grant, Child and Adult Care Food Program, Targeted Case Management, and Tiny-k Early Intervention Services.
UNATTENDED CHILDREN IN THE LIBRARY
We would like to remind parents about our Unaccompanied Children policy and Library Code of Conduct for Public Library Behavior.  We ask that you remind your children of some rules of the library if you allow them to come to the library after school.
All children under the age of eight (8) or one with special needs relating to physical and mental ability will be accompanied by their care provider at all times unless they are actively participating in a scheduled library activity.  Care providers for children under the age of eight (8) must be sixteen (16) years of age or older.  Older siblings under the age of sixteen (16) are not acceptable as care providers.
If the behavior of a child under the age of eight (8) becomes unacceptable, the parent or caregiver will be asked to correct the problem.  If the behavior continues, the parent or caregiver and child may be asked to leave the library.
Children eight (8) years of age and older may use the library unattended providing their behavior follows the Code of Conduct for Public Library Behavior.  Should the child’s behavior become unacceptable, the child will be asked to leave the library.  Concern for the child’s safety is paramount and an attempt will be made to locate the child’s parents so they are aware of the situation and may pick up their child if they wish.  If a parent cannot be located, the police may be called for assistance.
LIBRARY FEES
Did you know that library fees for overdues, faxes, copies, and meeting room rental are essential for the purchase of new library materials?  Money from fees collected in 2015 paid for more than 1/3 of ALL materials purchased for the SCL collection last year.  This includes books, audios, videos, magazines, newspapers, and databases.
Wireless Internet
Internet service at the Stevens County Library is paid for in part by the federal universal services Schools and Library Program, commonly known as the E-rate Program, for use on library property.
Thank you for supporting the Stevens County Library!
