Upcoming Workshops
Whose Ball is it Anyway? Transitioning Data Science Skills to Industry & StartUps
This special event provides an opportunity to hear George Ng, Cyence Co-Founder & Chief Technology Officer, speak about practical quantitative data applications. After George's presentation there will be time for Q&A, networking and refreshments! Register here.
Web Mapping with CARTO
This workshop will introduce online mapping using CARTO. We will discuss maps as a form of data visualization and along the way touch briefly on geographic data and spatial analysis. It's not too late to register here!  Relatedly, on Friday, October 28, the DLab and the GIF will each hold a workshop on web mapping in ArcGIS Online. Spooky coincidence!
Introduction to Regular Expressions
Regular expressions are an enormously useful tool for finding character patterns in data. In this workshop, we'll build regular expressions using special characters, sets or quantities of characters, the absence of certain characters, this-or-that alternatives, and other options. We'll briefly demonstrate how to use regular expressions in Python and R  so that you can use them when writing code. Register here!
Introduction to XML for Historical and Literary Research: Part 2
Join us for part 2 of this three-part workshop series that introduces the basic concepts and applications of XML, with hands-on exercises in HTML, KML, and TEI, using materials that are constructed around historical documents and literary texts. Register here!  Part 3 of the series will be on November 3.
QMG Presents: Data Collection for Hard-to-Reach Populations with Erin Kerrison
Join the Qualtiative Methods Group for a conversation with Dr. Erin Kerrison about using mixed-methods to collect data about hard-to-reach populations. Register here!
Machine Learning with H2O in R
The focus of this workshop is machine learning using the H2O and H2OEnsemble R packages. H2O is an open source distributed machine learning platform designed for big data, with the added benefit that it is easy to use on a laptop (in addition to a multi-node Hadoop or Spark cluster). Register here!
Web Scraping in Python, Part 1 of 2
This second iteration of our popular two part series is offered on November 2 & 9th. The workshop will demonstrate how to use Google Dev Tools, Selenium and the Python package Beautiful Soup to collect data via web scraping. There with ample opportunity to practice. Register here!
Stata Intensive: Part 1 of 3
We are offering a second iteration of our Stata introductory series beginning Thursday, November 3. This three part series will provide participants with a solid introduction to Stata including loading data sets, performing analyses, and basics of Stata programming. Register here!
QMG Presents: Conducting Particpatory Research with Robert Connell
Join the Qualtiative Methods Group for a conversation with Ph.D. candidate Robert Connell on participatory research.  Mr. Connell will be sharing how he used elements of participatory research methodology in his dissertation field research. Register here!
