Hail Mary
Hail Mary,  full of grace.
The Lord is with you.  Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
Dear Parents and Carers

At assembly on Monday morning the students prayed a decade of the Rosary.  October is traditionally the month of the Rosary where we honour Mary by reciting and reflecting on these prayers.  Below is a link to an outline on how to say the Rosary which can be used at home: http://www.how-to-pray-the-rosary-everyday.com/support-files/basic-rosary-guide.pdf
At assembly we discussed how saying the Rosary together helps us to demonstrate one of our school values - “We will each model faith in action”. We added that we can also show this value by being compassionate to others and their needs, sharing with others, helping others and being respectful.  Discuss with your children how they may model faith in action in their lives at home and at school.

In last week’s newsletter a link to the uniform policy on the school website was provided.  Most students have attended school this term wearing their uniform proudly and this is a credit to themselves and their parents.  With the warmer weather coming, students will tend to get shorter haircuts.  Please refrain from having lines or patterns cut into your child’s hair as this constitutes an extreme hairstyle and is not appropriate for school.  Your cooperation with this is appreciated.

On Wednesday this week, students in Year 3 who are making their First Reconciliation, and their families, attended the Reconciliation workshop in the Parish Hall.  Please keep these students in your prayers as they prepare for making the sacrament.  Thank you to Fr John and parish and school staff for coordinating this.

It has been pleasing to walk around classrooms and see the high expectations that are set for our students.  Having high expectations of students sets them up for success and helps them to build a better perception of what they can achieve.  A student’s own perception of their abilities and whether they believe they can achieve something is a strong indicator that they actually will.  When home and school are in partnership in setting high expectations for each individual child, the effect of this is greater still.

On Wednesday 26th October from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, the school will be hosting a cyber safety parent talk.  In these times, students have readily available access to technology and the internet and it is a major part of the world in which they live. It is a significant responsibility for schools and households to keep informed of best practice procedures to ensure students have safe online experiences.  All parents and carers are encouraged to attend the workshop and to speak regularly with their children about their online behaviour and the impact of this.

Well done to all students who represented the school today in the interschool carnival and thank you to Mrs Shakespeare for her coordination of this. Community members are invited to attend to support the students who are competing at tomorrow’s events.

Best wishes and God bless

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Year 6 Pastoral Care Group SOCKTOBER FUNDRAISER - Late last term, we had a visit from an African priest, Fr Erasmus who, through the support of Catholic Missions is helping to educate children and adults in the Catholic faith. We would like to support the work of Catholic Missions and Fr Erasmus by having a Fancy sock day for a Gold Coin donation on Friday 28th October.

Project Compassion - We recently received a Certificate of Appreciation from Caritas for raising over $1,000.00.

Rosary - In the month of October, we as a Church, traditionally dedicate our prayers through praying the Rosary to Our Blessed Mother Mary. During each Monday morning assembly in October, the Year 6 Pastoral Care Team will lead us in the ‘Hail Mary', the beautiful prayer to Mary to start our Monday morning assembly.  Traditionally throughout the months of May and October in the Catholic Church we pray the Rosary. In Year 6, we have been learning and making power point presentations about the Rosary.
Praying the Rosary taken from http://www.loyolapress.com/praying-the-rosary.htm

The Rosary helps us to pray to Jesus through Mary. When we pray the Rosary, we think about the special events, or mysteries, in the lives of Jesus and Mary.

The Rosary is made up of a string of beads and a crucifix. We hold the crucifix in our hands as we pray the Sign of the Cross. Then we pray the Apostles' Creed.

Between the crucifix and the medal of Mary, there is a single bead, followed by a set of three beads and another single bead. We pray the Lord's Prayer as we hold the first single bead and a Hail Mary at each bead in the set of three that follows. Then we pray the Glory Be to the Father.  On the next single bead we think about the first mystery and pray the Lord's Prayer.

There are five sets of ten beads; each set is called a decade. We pray a Hail Mary on each bead of a decade as we reflect on a particular mystery in the lives of Jesus and Mary. The Glory Be to the Father is prayed at the end of each set. Between sets is a single bead on which we think about one of the mysteries and pray the Lord's Prayer.

We end by holding the crucifix in our hands as we pray the Sign of the Cross.  Please encourage your children to pray the Rosary during October.
Liturgy - This Friday, is our Year 1 Liturgy which will be held in the classroom. Parents are most welcome to attend.

Sacramental News -
Thank you to the Fr John, staff , parents and children from Year 3 who attended the meeting for the Sacrament of Penance/Reconciliation last night.

STUDENT NEWS
Emily Freeman and Ellie Thompson from 3 Blue raised $120 for Princess Margaret Hospital by holding a cake stall on their driveway. The girls came up with the idea themselves. They also made posters and delivered leaflets to let the neighbourhood know about it.  On Monday this week they handed the funds over at the PMH office in Subiaco, where they received a certificate of appreciation.

Great work Emily and Ellie!

PARENT CYBER SAFETY EDUCATION SESSION

Wednesday, 26 October 2016
5:30pm – 7:30pm
The world of social media and technology is fast becoming the centre of our children's universe. It can be a challenging task for parents to stay on top of the dangers of social media and technology, while monitoring their child’s online behaviour and finding balance.

We are offering a workshop for parents to learn more about managing children’s technology use, including an introduction into the most popular social media platforms and practical tips for keeping kids safe online. We will also cover information on setting boundaries around technology, online behaviour management, and tools for managing technology both in and outside of the home.

If you have ever struggled with getting your kids off their games and into bed, worried about not knowing what your child is accessing online, or felt concerned that your child was spending too much time in the digital world, this workshop is for you!

Please register for this event by following the link provided. This is an important school event for all parents to attend.

YEAR 5 CLASS NEWS
Five Gold have worked on cross-curricula links between English and Religion this week. The students have demonstrated summary skills by story boarding 'Jesus appoints the Twelve'. They also looked at the key qualities for leadership, as modelled by Jesus and other world leaders. This links into the coming persuasive speeches Year Five are to write for next year's leadership positions.

This year, all Year Five students participated in the Smarter than Smoking project. The students viewed, analysed and voted for the most effective anti-smoking advertisement. They then submitted a vote through the 2016 Critics' Choice website. Taylah Preston was selected at random from 650 entries across Western Australia and won a $30 iTunes voucher. Well done, Taylah.
YEAR 6 RE NEWS
In Year Six, we have been learning about how to show love and goodness the way that Jesus does. We have discussed the ways in which we show love and goodness to others, as well as the challenges that make this difficult.  Here are some responses to questions that Six Gold and Six Blue have been discussing:

What makes it easy to express inner love and goodness?

Making sure that you can trust the person, and making sure they don’t pressure me.
- Shanel

It is not always easy but with God’s help its always easier.
-Eyoal

By being nice to others and helping them, also walking in God’s footsteps.
– Jake H

Talking to people that you trust.
- Sienna

What are some of the challenges to expressing inner love and goodness?

When the person is not around or when they don’t know what you’re going through.
– Ruby

Fear that I might fail.
- Joshua L

You might not have the time or courage to tell the people you love about your feelings.
- Connor

People might not listen to you If you tell them your feelings.
- Sophie

When people don’t want to talk to you or if they are sad.
- Zachary
SCIENCE NEWS
This term, we are learning about Physical Science:
  • Pre-Primary are looking at the way objects move including their own bodies. We started off with a game of musical statues to explore body movements.
  • Year One are exploring how light and sound are produced and how they can be sensed.  This week, we have played with musical instruments and felt the vibrations produced.
  • In Year Two, the students are discovering how a push or a pull affects an object's movement.  We started by seeing how some toys around the school can be moved.
  • Year Three are observing how heat can be produced in many ways and move from one object to another.  See if you can find things that produce heat at home.
  • Year Four are discovering how forces can be placed on an object through direct contact or from a distance. We have been playing games and identifying the different forces involved.
  • In Year Five, we are looking at light and shadows and how light can be absorbed, reflected and refracted. The students have been using torches to explore how light travels.
  • Year 6 are investigating how electrical energy can be transferred and transformed in electrical circuits, we even made some of our own circuits.
  •
    Science at home
There are some simple science experiments you can do with your child at home using items that you would normally have in your kitchen. This week’s experiment:

    How does a lens work?
    You will need:
  • Magnifying glass
  • Piece of white paper
  • Window
  • Instructions:
  • Take the magnifying glass and stand with your back to the window.
  • Hold the paper in your other hand.
  • Hold the magnifying glass up so that light from the window shines on to the paper.
  • What can you see?
  • (365 Awesome Science Experiments, Hinkler Books, 2016)

OSH CLUB
Last week, the children settled back into OshClub and talked to each other about all the wonderful things they did over the holidays. The children engaged in all sorts of activities together inclucing a zoob contest, balloon painting, box robots and goop.  They also drew some wonderful self portraits of themselves and shared postive interactions with each other.  The children are still engaging and enjoying role playing in the travel agency space.

The weather has been so nice the children have been engaging in outdoor play. They have been really interested in playing handball in small groups. Some of the other outdoor activities were skipping, sandpit play, soccer, and some tennis. The children have been creating some strucures together in the sandpit and taking turns to include each other in their activities. Please remember our policy -  No Hat No Play.

As our numbers have increased, it is essential for parents to use the online booking system. It would be wise to try and book ahead to secure your bookings. Due to the high numbers we cannot always guarantee on the day bookings. Remember to set up an online enrolment at  www.oshclub.com.au

Remember, if you have any special talents you would like to share with our OSHClub children, please feel free to pop in to see us to discuss and arrange a suitable time to share your talent with us.  Also, if your children attend any outside sports or clubs that you would like to share within the school community, please let us know and we can display this on our community board.

Reminder to all our OSHClub parents that if your child is unwell or won't be attending OSHClub for any reason and they have been booked in, please remember to call or text the OSHClub number to advise us of their non attendance. This is very important so we are not looking for a child who is not attending for the session. Make sure your contacts are updated regularly and that we are notified if someone else will be collecting your child. It is important for us to have the correct information to uphold our strict collection procedure and for the safety of your child.

Our OSHClub Program runs a before and after school program here within the school. We are located in the Year 1-3 block in the common area.  Our main gate to access in and out of the service, is the one closest to this block located in the Church/Staff car park.

Hours of operation are 6.30am to 9.00am and then from 2.40pm to 6.00pm. We provide breakfast until 8.00am, which consists of a variety of low sugar cereal and wholemeal/white toast with spreads. We also provide fresh fruit and a healthy snack for afternoon tea. We offer a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities which include things like art and craft, cooking, role-play activities, group outdoor games and much more.

If you have any queries please feel free to pop in and see us within the programmed hours or call us on 0428 161 879.
