Inspired

from Rebecca

Last month's inspiration wasn't very inspiring, but that is what grief does. Grief comes in waves and you just have to ride the wave for the good and the bad; for the inspiration and for the depression. I try to embrace the feelings, let them wash over me and let them go. Some days easier said than done.

I've had some time in my little pitty party and have come to a new revolution. I've decided that I will begin the set up for MY year!!
I've decided that 2017 is going to BE my year. I've been working on me for almost three years and I'm proud of what I've accomplished and it's time to up my game. I've always wished for those last 10 lbs to go away. I've worked so hard on my physical body (on the outside that is) but this year I'm going to work on me from the inside out. This year's B2B physical challenge will be put on the shelf. If, however, you want to work on yourself like me, it's going to be all  about nutrition. What I've come to find is you can't exercise yourself out of a bad diet. I always thought portion control was my issue, but it's not. I can eat only 2 cookies and be satisfied, but I want to not eat 2 cookies. I want to make better food choices. It seems kind of simple, but it's not. So I'm going to enlist a  nutritionist to teach me how to do this.

But, not only do I want to figure that out, I want to up my triathlon skills and look for the next goal. I did my "irongirl" & had a blast, but now it's time to look at an Olympic distance. Almost a mile swim, 25 mile bike, and a 10k. So even though we will not be doing an official B2B Challenge this year, it doesn't mean you stop. Truth be told next year is the 5 year mark that I have been without my Lil Superman and he would have been 12, and I don't know where the grief roller-coaster will be.

Bikes for Kids Charity Bike Ride

CMAK Birthday 2 Birthday Challenge 2016 Recap

by Rebecca

Hard to believe another Birthday 2 Birthday challenge is in the books. I have to say both were a challenge, but, this last one, I enjoyed the most. I really love to pedal! I have to say I was a little disappointed that this year's participation had not grown, but it was a huge commitment and not everyone has a bike. Regardless it was a lot of fun and we had really cool jackets donated by Fleet Feet Sports and New Balance. For those who did the B2B this year but were unable to make the FINALE, your jackets will be mailed to you shortly.  Thank you Zane Cycles for helping with discounted prices on bikes for those who wanted to purchase a new bike. Many thanks to Bikes for Kids for letting us join them on their inaugural charity bike ride on October 2nd at the Old Saybrook Middle School.

Race4Chase Kids Triathlon Program:

As we contemplate how many applications for Race4Chase Kids Tri program sites we will accept in 2017, we can be reminded of the impact the program has on its participants by reading the essay written by Charlie Masset (9 yrs) when he returned to school in the Fall and its accompanying drawing.

Race4Chase Boston Marathon Team 2017

CMAK has be awarded two charity bibs for the 2017 Boston Marathon under the John Hancock Non-Profit Program.  We will have officially opened the application process for anyone who would like to be considered for the bib(s).  As a prerequisite for the program for being awarded a bib, the individual applying must guarantee that they will raise a minimum of $5,000 for CMAK and post these monies on the Race4Chase Boston 2017 online fundraising page on Crowdrise. For those interested, please access the application HERE and send the completed application via email to kgrimes@chasekowaslkifund.com.

We will also encourage any qualified marathoners to join the team and support the cause.  There is no minimum fundraising requirement to be part of the team if you have secured entry on your own.  Last year, the team consisted of seven runners and we hope to exceed this number for 2017.  To join or donate to the team, click here: 2017 Race4Chase Boston Marathon Team

In addition to the Race4Chase Boston Marathon team, we will also be forming a Race4Chase Boston Marathon Midnite Bike Ride Team, encouraging supporters to participate in the Midnite bike ride along the course route the evening before the race.  This would be our second year participating in this event and it is sure one not to miss so mark the calendar now and save the date: APRIL 17-18, 2017

If you are interested in participating, email Kevin Grimes at kgrimes@chasekowalskifund.com to get on our list. More details to follow in later newsletters.

BATON UPDATE

NEW Baton (#17)

John Wedding-Erin Flanagan

After breaking 3:20 in the marathon and setting her Personal Record at the marathon distance (3:19:42), Erin Flanagan passed the 17th Race4Chase baton to John Wedding from Louisville KY.  John, who finished just in front of Erin in 3:17:13, is a veteran of over 50 marathons which is even more impressive considering he only started marathoning in 2011.  We understand that John may join Erin again at her 17th Marathon at the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon on November 5th, 2016 and perhaps will be joining the 2017 Race4Chase Boston Marathon Team!!! (see above article)

BATON (#16)-

Tom Peters - Ross Anderson

Tom Peters
continued his Fall marathon season at the BayState Marathon in Lowell, MA where he recorded a 3:25:31 marathon and passed the Race4Chase baton to Ross Anderson of Scotland who crossed the line in 3:24:19.  Ross has his sights on bringing the baton back over the Atlantic for an April marathon in the UK.  This will be the third baton currently in Europe with baton #1 with triathlete, Sam Dickinson, in the UK and #14 with endurance athlete and author, Gerry Duffy, in Ireland. We will have more details over the winter.

Baton (#5)

C. Burt- Molly Patterson

Molly Patterson
conquered her first half marathon at the Oak Island Lighthouse Half Marathon along the coast of North Carolina on April 22nd, 2016, finishing 7th in her age group!  We await news on the next baton recipient.

Baton (#12)-

Tammy Powell- Kathy Beith

Tammy Powell
passed the baton to Kathy Beith, a retired 3rd grade teacher who started triathlon training in her 60's. When Kathy started triathlon training, she could not swim one length of the pool. After three short years, she has come a long way. She just competed in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii after qualifying at Vineman this summer. Tammy writes, "Like Chase, Kathy is an inspiration to all of us who know her. I am very honored to have passed the baton on to Kathy."

From a believer that life begins at 60, here is more about Kathy in her own words, " I live in Franklin, Pennsylvania, a small town in North Western Pa.  I found myself 75 pounds heavier than I would like.   I started losing the weight when I was 60.   It took me two years. I took up the sport of triathlon when I retired from teaching third grade at  63.    It was slow in the beginning because I couldn’t swim and was afraid of open water.   My confidence has grown with the help of an excellent swim coach,  Drew Sapp, from New Castle Pa.   I am part of the Fuel Your Passion Tri Team coached by Kim Schwabenbauer, pro, college teacher, lecturer and my foundation.  I did my first half IM shortly before I turned 64, barely making the time cut off.   I tried my hat at a full last November at 65.   It was IM Florida.  I missed the swimming time cut off by 3 minutes.   It made me determined to try harder.   This past summer I did IM Vineman in California.    I made the swim time cut off with 45 minutes to spare.   I also qualified for the World Championships in Kona.   I wondered about the wind and heat, but my husband said, “Go For It.”   There is a swim time cutoff, 4 bike cutoffs and 1 cutoff during the run.  Somehow I made them all and finished in 16 hours and 31 minutes.  I am signed up for Ironman 70.3 Florida and Ironman 140.6 Boulder for next season.    I will turn 67 during this next season.   I plan to race as long as I can."

May we all emulate Kathy in whatever we pursue.

Baton (#13)-

Terry Gang- Jackson Kejsa

Thanks to Terry Gang, the #13 Race4Chase baton is in the hands of the overall winner of the Green Bulldog 5k, Jackson Krejsa.  Jackson, currently a Junior at Green High School in Uniontown, Ohio, outdistanced the field in a time of 16:55.  We await to hear what he has in store for the Race4Chase baton as he continues his Fall XC season.

A big thanks to RELAYBATONS.com for donating all the Race4Chase batons for this program and also for use in our Race4Chase Kid’s Triathlon program.
