Your Haringey Hero Volunteer Awards

Do you know someone who goes the extra mile to help others by volunteering for a community group or voluntary organisation? We want to honour them with a Haringey Heroes Volunteer of the Year award.

Back in the summer we told hundreds of stories involving people doing amazing things across our borough. Now we’re teaming up with the Bridge Renewal Trust to recognise volunteers who put so much into their community. We want to hear from you if there is somebody you would like to nominate. There are two categories – Haringey Young Hero (Volunteer) of the Year and the overall Haringey Hero (Volunteer of the Year).

The Bridge Renewal Trust Community Impact Awards are also requesting nominations for community groups and voluntary organisations across the board who make a difference to people’s lives.

It’s quick and easy to nominate with a closing date of 7 November 2016. Make your nomination now. The winners of the awards will be announced on Friday 25 November 2016.

Cannon Road affordable housing scheme recognised in national awards

The Cannon Road development in Tottenham, part of the ongoing regeneration of the area, has been named ‘Affordable Housing Development of the Year’ at the Top 60 Development Awards organised by Inside Housing. Cannon Road was officially opened by Tottenham Hotspur and Newlon Housing Trust in November 2015 after the redevelopment of a derelict rubber factory in North Tottenham, and includes 222 high specification new affordable homes.

Social Supermarket to open in Tottenham

The go-ahead has been given for Haringey’s first Social Supermarket, with a contract awarded to Community Shop to run the store supported by £100,000 grant from the Mayor of London (GLA). Social supermarkets reduce food waste by selling ‘waste’ stock at low prices to local people on low incomes who are struggling with food poverty. Haringey's Social Supermarket is planned to be in the Eric Allin Community Centre in Northumberland Park.

  • 24 October, 1- 4pm: St James Square, Muswell Hill Broadway

Since 2010 the government has cut Haringey’s budget by 40% in real terms. We now employ 45% fewer staff, have 12 fewer buildings and share IT services with Camden and Islington councils but demand is rising for services like adult social care and emergency housing.

£27 million Hornsey Town Hall investment proposal agreed

A proposal which aims to secure a £27 million investment to completely restore the iconic Hornsey Town Hall and deliver a new community arts centre, improved town hall square, new café / restaurant and a boutique hotel has been agreed by Haringey’s cabinet. The hotel element of the scheme will help to cover the extensive running costs associated with the town hall and will guarantee the future of Hornsey Town Hall.

Haringey fights back against fly-tipping with new £400 fines

Fly-tipping fines have been raised from £80 to £400 in a bid to fight back against the anti-social environmental crime. Cllr Peray Ahmet, Haringey’s Cabinet Member for Environment said: “People are sick and tired of fly-tipping and its associated cost to our taxpayers are over £3 million a year. We’re working around the clock with our partners Veolia to make our streets cleaner and our new £400 fine sends a clear message that we are fighting back against fly-tippers.”
