Vol 1, No 7: Maps & More


This month's list features a handful of unusual maps, from paleotectonics to geologic to an international boundary map that crosses some of the most beautiful terrain in Montana. The list is rounded out with a little Yellowstone history, a scarce first edition Rex Stout in its jacket, a signed first of James Welch's most controversial work, and an unpublished volume of poetry by the illustrious author Willis Barnstone, signed to the late Jim Harrison.

38 x 65 cm, 1:62500, 100-foot contour intervals. Reprint of sheet 19. The 59-map series was produced as a result of the 1908 treaty between the U.S. and Great Britain to delineate the northern border.

This sheet encompasses the border area currently occupied by Glacier National Park, including the Flathead River, Kintla Lake, and the "Summit of the Rocky Mountains" or Continental Divide. Fine. $50. Order here.

Shows and discusses detailed aspects of geologic, topographic and mineral properties found in the Silver City quadrangle in New Mexico.  Very good. $50. Order here.

Staplebound wraps. Large folio (38 x 56 cm), pp. 32 plus 9 plates of color maps. Cream stable-bound wraps with blue spine tape. Rubbing and light creasing to wraps with binding tape lifting at edges. Catalog stamp on front wrap and minor underlining to text. Small closed tears in various locations.

Plates 1 - 7 unfold to four times the size of the folio, plate 9 to twice the size. Includes paleo-geologic descriptions of each region of the continental United States, references cited and index to localities and sources.  Very good. $75. Order here.

Willis Barnstone

African Bestiary of Kenya & Zanzibar

Plastic wrappers. Quarto (28 cm), pp. 145. Association copy, signed and simply inscribed by the author to the late poet and novelist Jim Harrison on dedication page: "for Jim- Willis."

This bound galley is a collection of 58 poems with ink drawings by Barnstone that does not appear to have been published in its entirety, though nine of the poems and accompanying artwork were featured in the Summer 2008 edition of New Letters.

 
Harrison once praised Barnstone's work saying, "If there were any justice, which there probably isn't, the world of letters would erect a monument of Willis Barnstone and strew it with fresh wildflowers every day." (Torrey, Orr: 208).

Barnstone is a Biblical and Gnostic scholar as well as a memoirist, poet, literary critic, and a contemporary of Jorge Luis Borges, with whom he collaborated on a series of translations. Fine. $200. Order here.

The Nero Wolfe double mystery with "Booby Trap." Jacket has multiple significant chips, boards are worn at tail of spine with missing material, former owner's name scratched out on front pastedown. Binding is tight, pages are clean.

Unusual to find in original jacket (Penzler, 18-20). Good in good jacket. $300.

Octavo (23.5 cm), pp. 391. Signed by author on half-title page. Mauve boards with white quarter-cloth. Deckle edges. Map of Montana Territory on endpapers. Sun-fading along top edge of boards, previous owner's name on front free endpaper, and binding is a little loose. Jacket shows small closed tears and minor bumping.

The third novel by the author of “Winter in the Blood” – a history-rich saga of the Blackfeet Indians in the late 1800s – is a winner of the American Book Award, and the frequent target of book-banning attempts. Very good in very good jacket. $65. Order here.

The first book from Brannaman, who was the inspiration for the protagonist in Nicholas Evan's book, The Horse Whisperer, and was the lead equine consultant for the movie. No jacket as issued. Near fine. $55. Order here.
