The Lake Edge News

President's Note

Earlier this month, I attended the Mayor's Neighborhood Conference held at the Monona Terrace.  It was a day-long conference with numerous workshops.  The theme was Working Together to Make a Better Community.  I was in good company with familiar faces at the conference - a couple of fellow neighbors, past LENA guest speakers, and elected officials.  While I won't go into the details of the conference, there was certainly a recurring theme on the importance and relevance of a comprehensive plan including strategies to engage residents in the planning process and equity based on national trends affecting our city.  As the NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver, the conference keynote speaker said, "by 2050, the United States will look very different than it does today."  So, the question becomes "What are we going to do and how do we plan for the future?"
That said, I'd leave it there for some food for thought and let's shift gear back to our neighborhood.  We've a busy month ahead with events and activities to celebrate the cooler months.  We will first celebrate with an inaugural event to help neighbors in need by raking their yard.  This is followed by an informational session on Complete Street.  We'd round up the month of October in a fun event aimed to raise awareness and in promoting a neighborhood that is inclusive to all a la Teal Pumpkin project.  Help spread the word and don't forget to sign up!

What's New
Information Session: Complete Streets
Join LENA in a panel discussion to learn more about Complete Streets and how it impacts our neighborhood.   Panelists include members in the City's Planning, Engineering, and Neighborhood Divisions, and the Madison Public Library.  Details available on our website: Complete Street - Info Session.  The session will be held at the Lake Edge Lutheran Church (in the lower level) on Monday, October 24 at 5:30PM.  Entrance via Hegg Avenue.
Rake Fest and Fall Fest
Rake Fest: Join us in a community building event where we come together to help a neighbor in need* by raking their yard.  Either sign up to help rake or have your yard raked.  The event is scheduled to take place rain or shine on Sunday, October 23 at 10AM.  Meeting place is TBD.  *Consider those who require additional assistance such as the elderly, neighbors who recently sustained injuries, or new parents.

Fall/Halloween Fest:  Join LENA in raising the awareness and in promoting a neighborhood that is inclusive to all.  Join us on Saturday, October 29 at 4PM at the Lake Edge Park for a kick off costume parade and "scavenger hunt".

**Be sure to sign up for one or both events!
Eat Fresh, Locally Produced Food
At this month's LENA meeting, our guest speaker, Erika Jones, the Executive Director of the Fairshare CSA Coalition provided information on CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).  The organization's mission is to make CSA "more accessible by linking people who care about the food they eat to local farmers who grow top-quality food for their local communities."  Over the next few weeks, LENA will be reaching out to gather interest from neighbors, businesses and organizations, and those in surrounding neighborhoods in hopes to establish a new public drop-off site for fresh, locally farmed produce and food for the upcoming growing season.  Stay tuned for more details.  In the meanwhile, check out the Fairshare's website for information.  LENA has a limited supply of brochures.  Email lakeedgeNA@gmail.com for a copy.

This year's Annual Meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 9 at the East Side Club.  Be sure to check out our website or join our Facebook group for up-to-date information.

Olbrich Biergarten Proposal

by Mike Bare

Imagine a beautiful Saturday summer evening with a light breeze off Lake Monona, a view of downtown, a cold beer in your hand, and gemutlichkeit all around.  That vision for a German-style biergarten is what I presented along with two business partners to the City of Madison's request for proposals for "park place-making concepts" at Olbrich Park's underutilized Beach House.  We are excited that the City chose our biergarten idea alongside Rutabaga Paddlesports to provide water sport and other recreational rental opportunities.  MORE...

Lake Edge Lutheran Welcomes LENA

by Stephen Marsh, LENA Member

Lake Edge Lutheran Church is one of the newest institutional members of LENA, and we just want to say "hello" to you!  We are located at 4032 Monona Drive, and have been a part of the Lake Edge community since 1954.  We are an open and affirming congregation (which means all are welcome no matter your ethnicity, color, gender or sexual orientation).  We joyfully worship God through Jesus Christ in a blended worship service that isheld at 8:00AM and 10:30AM each Sunday morning, and then go forth to live out our faith in the midst of the places and spaces where we live, work and play.  Many of our members live right here in our Lake Edge community.
We are a child-friendly faith community and have Sunday School for all ages (including Adult Education) between 9:30 - 10:30AM.  We also have a children's sermon at both services and a Children's Activity Time for children ages 3 through 5th grade during our 10:30AM worship for parents to more easily be able to listen to the sermon.
We look forward in many ways to getting to know you and our Lake Edge community better and being involved in the important task of building relationships.  Until then, may the peace of the Lord be with you!
