Growing the Movement: Action!
It has been a busy summer for media education and activism!
MAY Project Censored director and ACME partner Mickey Huff spoke at Ralph Nader’s Breaking Through Power about the importance of media literacy and civic engagement in education as a means of supporting and achieving equity and social justice.
JULY Diane Levin and Mass Media Literacy’s Alexis Ladd presented the annual Media Institute at Boston’s Wheelock College, training working educators and college students.
AUGUST Board member Jacques Brodeur brought ACME partner The Weave together with political economist Riccardo Petrella at the World Social Forum in Montreal. John Collins (Weave) and Shane Rogers (Clarkson University) asked Petrella about poverty and capitalism, among other issues.
AUGUST Brodeur also presented two child-focused CML sessions at the World Social Forum, one on screen-time reduction and another on the importance of banning marketing to kids.
AUGUST Director Bill Yousman and a new cohort of graduate students kicked off the second year of Sacred Heart University’s Media Literacy and Digital Culture master’s program in August. We congratulate last year’s graduates and welcome this year’s!
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER With the Media Stewards Project, ACME board member John Boyer explores the problems of commercially driven broadcast journalism in the U.S. See his blog post on the need for media literacy in the context of the 2016 presidential race.
SEPTEMBER The ACME board is evolving: Lori Bindig has stepped into the role of secretary, and we welcome Susan Owusu! A college professor and community-based media educator, Susan brings extensive experience in race and media education, both in formal education and with teens in community settings.
SEPTEMBER Project Censored published its 40th-anniversary edition of Censored, exploring the year’s top censored stories.
Fall and spring offer many more exciting opportunities for engagement, action, collaboration, and activism:
OCTOBER Project Censored celebrates its 40th anniversary with the Media Freedom Summit (#censored40), cosponsored by ACME and SHU’s Media Literacy and Digital Culture graduate program. Says Noam Chomsky, “It is immensely gratifying to be able to congratulate Project Censored on the Fortieth Anniversary of its remarkable achievements, both in bringing to us critically important stories that have had little or no media attention and in engaging young activists ... to carry on this very valuable work. A crucial contribution to the hope for a more just and democratic society.” We hope you can join us for this unconference promoting social justice through media freedom and critical media literacy.
OCTOBER ACME friend Frank Baker offers timely tips on watching the debates with students.
OCTOBER/NOVEMBER Media Literacy Week this year takes place Oct. 31–Nov. 4. Watch the ACME website for tips for engagement tied to this annual week of education and action. Also, check out the Global Media Literacy Week!
2017 Early next year, ACME will publish the inaugural issue of our e-journal, Action in Media Education, with work from our April summit. Watch Twitter and Facebook for more information!
FEBRUARY The 2017 Critical Media Literacy Conference in Savannah, Ga., is seeking presenters through Dec. 16, 2017.
