Our mission is to promote, maintain, and enhance Oakland's wildland parks and trails.
October 18, 2016

Our nonprofit organization concentrates its work in City of Oakland wildland parks. But, one of the most special things about Dimond Canyon and Joaquin Miller Park is that they're connected to the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD), the Bay Area Ridge Trail, and more than 500 miles of trails that span the entire East Bay.

Back in March, I heard that John Sutter, the EBRPD Ward 2 board member for almost 20 years, was retiring, and a whole new slate of candidates would by competing for the open seat. We set out then to help inform the community.

Background

The East Bay Regional Park District is governed by a seven-member board of directors, who are publicly elected to serve four-year terms. Each Board Member represents a specific geographic area of the Park District. The District itself comprises all of Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

Ward 2 represents: most of Oakland, Piedmont, Canyon, Moraga, Orinda, Orinda Village, Rheem Valley, Lafayette, Rossmoor, and part of Walnut Creek.

Parks in Ward 2 include: portion of Briones, Anthony Chabot (north of Keller Ave. if extended east), Claremont Canyon, Huckleberry, Leona Open Space, a small portion of Las Trampas, Redwood, Roberts, Sibley, and Temescal.

Get to Know the Candidates

With support from the Park District, and partnering with the League of Women Voters of Oakland, we co-hosted a candidate forum at the Trudeau Center on October 5, 2016. And, because we had collected some excellent questions from the audience that we ran out of time to ask, we created a questionnaire that was offered to the candidates. All four candidates participated in the 90-minute forum. Three out of four responded to the questionnaire.

Local representatives – the ones who oversee the streets in front of our homes, the sidewalks in front of our businesses, and our trails(!) – are the ones who affect our everyday lives the most. We hope this effort helps you make an informed decision.

See you on the trails,
