Locally Laid
by Lucie B. Amundsen

When Lucie Amundsen had a rare night out with her husband, she never imagined what he’d tell her over dinner—that his dream was to quit his office job (with benefits!) and start a commercial-scale pasture-raised egg farm. With an unexpected passion for this dubious enterprise, Amundsen shares a messy, wry, and entirely educational story of the unforeseen payoffs (and frequent pitfalls) of one couple’s "ag" adventure—and many, many hours spent wrangling chickens.

News of the World
by Paulette Jiles

Set in Texas in 1870, this is the story of a journey taken by 72 year old Captain Jefferson Kidd and 10 year old Johanna Leonberger. The Captain has been asked to return Johanna to her aunt and uncle in San Antonio, after her having spent the last four years living with the Kiowa tribe. Arriving in San Antonio, the reunion is neither happy nor welcome. The Captain must hand Johanna over to an aunt and uncle she does not remember—strangers who regard her as an unwanted burden. A respectable man, Captain Kidd is faced with a terrible choice: abandon the girl to her fate or become—in the eyes of the law—a kidnapper himself.
Ice-Out
by Mary Casanova

Ice-Out returns to the frigid and often brutal Prohibition-era borderland of Mary Casanova’s beloved novel Frozen, and to the characters who made it a favorite among readers of all ages. Owen, smitten with Sadie Rose, is struggling to make something of himself at a time when no one seems to hold the moral high ground. Bootlegging is rife, corruption is rampant, and lumber barons run roughshod over the people and the land. As hard as things seem when his father dies, stranding his impoverished family, they get considerably tougher—and more complicated—when Owen gets caught up in the suspicious deaths of a sheriff and deputy on the border.

Inspired by real events in early 1920s Minnesota, and by Mary Casanova’s own family history, Ice-Out is at once a story of young romance against terrible odds and true grit on the border between license and responsibility, rich and poor, and right and wrong in early twentieth-century America.

Greetings!

We were heartened by our visit to the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association annual trade show last week in Minneapolis. Perhaps the best sign was the number of new bookstores that were present – many of them small like ours. Aside from the large number of booksellers, there were dozens of authors and a cavernous showroom full of publishers’ kiosks. There is still a world of books out there! We met some great writers – some old friends like Peter Geye, Nick Butler, and Michael Perry as well as some of our longtime heroes like Wendell Berry. We found some great new titles to add to our collection and picked up some helpful tips on how to carry on this curious business.

It’s been a busy fall so far. We’ve had a number of events – several at Northland College in Ashland. Kurt Fausch was here to receive the 2016 Sigurd Olson Nature Writing Award for his For the Love of Rivers. We laughed along with Lucie Amundsen and her book Locally Laid that recounts her family’s experience in setting up an egg business having had no prior experience. Tom Peacock read from his new stories of Native American humor and wisdom – The Tao of Nookomis. And there are more coming up so stay tuned!

Remember, if you’ve lost yours,
we are your local bookstore!

Manitou Island Book Reading and Discussion with Edgar Award Winner William Kent Krueger

What: William Kent Krueger Reading & Discussion
When: Sunday, October 23rd at 1pm
Where: Big Water Coffee Roasters, 117 Rittenhouse Avenue, Bayfield
Free & open to the public

Cork O'Connor is back! A taut, suspenseful thriller, Manitou Canyon features everything readers love in a Cork O’Connor novel: a dramatic Northwoods setting, an intriguing view of the Objibwe culture, an enigmatic crime, masterful storytelling, and more than a few surprises. Since the violent deaths of his wife, father, and best friend all occurred in previous Novembers, Cork O’Connor has always considered it to be the cruelest of months. Yet, his daughter has chosen this dismal time of year in which to marry, and Cork is understandably uneasy.

Join us on Sunday, October 23rd at 1pm at Big Water Coffee Roasters where New York Times best selling author William Kent Krueger will read from and discuss his latest mystery! Following the discussion, we will have copies available for purchase and signing across the street at Apostle Islands Booksellers. Get a personalized copy as the perfect gift this upcoming holiday season!

THIS WEEKEND!
October 21-23, 2016
Teacher Appreciation Weekend!

How in the world can we thank those amazing people who have guided and educated us over the years? Teachers take care of our children during the day; they grade their papers at night; they offer extra help before school; and they often work extra jobs to make ends meet. Sometimes, "thank you" just doesn't seem like enough.

So, Friday, October 21st through Sunday, October 23rd, we are celebrating our Teacher Appreciation weekend. All educators will receive 20% off of their entire purchase! While we know teachers deserve so much more, we figured this is the least we could do.

From all of us at Apostle Islands Booksellers,
Thank you!

What we're reading...

The Tao of Nookomis
by  Thomas D. Peacock

Tom is member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe and lives nearby in Little Sand Bay near Red Cliff. His stories come from the wisdom of his ninety-five year old grandmother (Nookomis in the Anishinaabe language) as well as other teachers in his life. He captures the circular simplicity and complexity of native life and the difficulties of incorporating and living that life in the modern world. Tom’s previous books include Ojibwe Waasa Inaabida, The Good Path, and The Four Hills of Life.

For the Love of Rivers
by Kurt Fausch

While Kurt Fausch is a scientist’s scientist, he also happens to be a writer’s writer. He is winding up his career as a professor in the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology at Colorado State University. In his book he celebrates the beauty and mystery of rivers and streams in lyrical, accessible prose. He draws from a lifetime career as a field biologist and weaves in the human dimension from the tragic death of a young Japanese colleague. The result is the winner of the prestigious Sigurd Olson Nature Writing Award for 2016.

Final Thoughts...

The Girl From the North Country
by Bob Dylan

If you're traveling in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
For she was once a true love of mine.

Well, if you go when the snowflakes storm
When the rivers freeze and summer ends
Please see for me if she's wearing a coat so warm
To keep her from the howlin' winds.

Please see from me if her hair hanging down
If it curls and flows all down her breast
Please see from me if her hair hanging down
That's the way I remember her best.

Congratulations to the winner of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature!
