Heart n Soul's October newsletter!

This month we've been making comics, watching Lizzie Emeh perform at the National Gallery and building our own robots with TV’s ‘Robot Wars’! Plus we have an exciting project that we want YOU to be part of! To find out more, carry on reading...

Participants with Roman Kemp at the Global Radio studios.

Heart n Soul Radio

This month five young participants visited the Global Radio studios in Leicester Square. After touring the studios they took part in an interview with Capital FM presenter Roman Kemp as part of Global Radio’s Make Some Noise campaign. Some of the money raised from the campaign will be used to fund our work on Heart n Soul Radio.

The Awesome Recorders made another podcast for Heart n Soul Radio. The show is set in space and features original stories, music and interviews from participants at Do Your Own Thing

You can listen to and download the podcast on iTunes here.

The Big 30

Last month we kicked off our Big 30 celebrations with The Beautiful Octopus Club Festival at London’s Southbank Centre. Over 3,500 people partied with us and you can see a brand new video of the festival here.

We’ve also just completed our first Big 30 activity. Heart n Soul artist Tilley Milburn and artist and illustrator Ben Connors led a two-day workshop at Grinling Gibbons Primary School as part of their Aspirations Week.
They worked with students to make their own comics inspired by Tilley’s ‘Goggieland’ (above) – a place where anything is possible!

This is just the first step in getting everyone involved in the Big 30 – celebrating 30 years of Heart n Soul!

Heart n Soul artist Lizzie Emeh performing.

Lizzie Emeh

Artist Lizzie Emeh performed at The National Gallery this month as part of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Network Conference.

The conference explored ways to make museums and galleries more accessible for people with disabilities. Lizzie performed tracks from her latest EPs, My Baboo and The Clan

Next up, Lizzie will be performing in Edinburgh at the RI World Congress next week. For a full list of Lizzie’s upcoming live dates, follow her on Facebook or visit her website here.

Ifeoma Orjiekwe's exhibition, Rich and Juicy, at the Enclave.

Out and about

Heart n Soul artists have been sharing their work at gigs and events across London.

Too Hot for Candy performed at Rich Mix as part of Barbican’s Open Lab event, while Tilley Milburn headed to The Wellcome Collection to take part in an event called The Human Library, where instead of borrowing books you borrow people!

Also, it was great to see artist Ifeoma Orjiekwe's exhibition, Rich and Juicy, at local art space Enclave in Deptford. The exhibition was put together by creative arts company Could be Good, where Ifeoma is an artist-in-residence. To find out more about all our artists, visit our website here.

Taking Part

A Do Your Own Thing participant getting ready for a music session.

Do Your Own Thing

This month participants had the chance to write their own lyrics for a live music session and take part in a digital pop-up band. The art group got creative making their own sculptures, as well as making lots of new badges.

It’s also been a great time for everyone to think of new performance opportunities while we take a short break from The Squidz Club, which will be back in June 2017. Stay tuned for more news about our young peoples' projects, coming soon!

Two robots from the TV show 'Robot Wars' at an Allsorts session.

Allsorts

The Celebrate Season finished on a high with a very special visit from TV show 'Robot Wars'. John Findlay, whose company creates the robots, showed Allsorts participants how to make their own. They also had the chance to meet two of the robots from the show!

Allsorts is back on Thursday 10 November, but until then you can take part in the Heart n Soul Choir on Thursdays from 2-4pm at The Midi Music Company. To find out more, visit our website here.
