PASTOR APPRECIATION MONTH
The church board would like to remind the congregation that October is Pastor Appreciation Month.  We encourage you to say a personal word of thanks to them or to drop off notes/cards of appreciation at the information desk and we will get those to the appropriate pastor.  We are blessed as a church to have such gifted, dedicated, and called ministers who serve us on a daily basis.  Please take a moment to let them know that we appreciate what they do and the sacrifices they and their families make.

HOLY INFLUENCE OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND!

One of the joys of my ministry these days is partnering with Dr. Richard Parrott in leading a group open to anyone interested in increasing your holy influence in your world.  In other words: LEADERSHIP!  It meets every Wednesday evening from 6:00-7:30 PM, in the McManus Conference Room, and we hear from some of the truly influential people in our society via video or online presentations, and then discuss the applications to our lives.  What great sessions we are having!

I think a lot these days about Holy Influence.  It is based on such principles as Jesus' challenge to his early followers to be "salt and light" in their world.  To live out the ethics of the Kingdom here in this world that He outlined in the Sermon on the Mount.  To take seriously the Apostle Paul's instructions in the epistles of the New Testament to shape our attitudes and behaviors to reflect the holy character of God and live in surrendered obedience to the truth of Scripture.  What a tall challenge!

Sometimes the simplest of gestures illustrate the abundant opportunities in every one of our lives to extend holy influence!  This week several of us participated in serving a simple lunch to the teachers at four public schools our church partners with, all in close proximity to our church.  I was privileged to do so at Caldwell Elementary.

As the teachers filed into their Resource Room to receive our gift of food, conversations opened up.  We praised them as "front-line heroes" who are "making a huge difference" in the lives of children of our immediate community.  We thanked them profusely for their work and leadership.  We told them "teachers are so very important" to us.  They were overwhelmed with our affirmation.  All over a simple sandwich, chips and cookies.

Here are some of the comments we heard:
"Not many tell us they appreciate us."
"Most people don't think we're heroes."
"We sure haven't heard compliments like that for awhile."

I asked several of them if their school disappeared tomorrow, would anyone notice?  They resoundingly answered "Yes" - and I reminded them THEY were making that difference by teaching there!  Their smiles and uplifted eyes and attitudes revealed their renewed energy to keep going another day!

And then we heard things like:

"Are you ears burning?  This whole school is talking about First Nazarene."
"We just love you people and what you do!"

"Your church is doing some very important work in our community."

And at another school our team heard this statement from a teacher:
"Thank you for being the hands and feet of Jesus today to us."

Wow.  Thank you Pastor Sabrina Jones for leading us in this effort.  And thank you Lord for yet another opportunity - to extend influence - HOLY influence - in our great city.
