Regional Economic Growth Forum

Forum success

The Regional Economic Growth Forum held on 6 October 2016 at the Brolga Theatre in Maryborough was again successful in gaining widespread interest, with over 190 registrations.  There was lots of positive feedback about the forum on the day, and an online survey being conducted by DSD should give a broader and more realistic overview of the success of the day, as well as ways in which we might improve it in the future.

Members of Parliament

Local Member, Bruce Saunders, opened the forum and local State Member Tony Perrett and new Federal Member Lew O’Brien were also present.  Sen. Fiona Nash, Minister for Regional Development, Minister for Local Government and Territories and Minister for Regional Communications addressed the Forum on her views on regional Australia and supporting regional business.
Mayors; Jack Dempsey (Bundaberg), Keith Campbell (South Burnett), Chris Loft (Fraser Coast), Rachel Chambers (North Burnett), Lew O’Brien (Federal Member for Wide Bay), Senator Fiona Nash, Mick Curran (WBBROC Chair) and Tony Perrett (State Member for Gympie).

Opportunities for producers and contractors

Star Entertainment have won a $3 billion dollar contract with the State Government to develop Queen’s Wharf on the North Bank of the Brisbane River.  While this is not in the Wide Bay Burnett, it presents many opportunities for the region.

Contractors will be required in the building phase which will not be completed until 2024 (final stage).

Over 50 restaurants in Queen’s Wharf will also be looking for regions like Wide Bay Burnett for local Queensland produce.  To highlight this, Star Entertainment had one of their chefs provide a quick cooking demonstration to the forum, using local mandarins, macadamias and avocados.
To keep up to date with developments of the Queen’s Wharf, subscribe to their monthly update at http://www.statedevelopment.qld.gov.au/major-projects/queens-wharf-brisbane.html and see when construction jobs and food supplier opportunities become available.
If you are interested in being considered as a supplier to the Star Entertainment Group, visit their website www.startentertainmentgroup.com.au to complete a Supplier Registration Form.

Regional Priorities highlighted

WBBROC’s regional priorities were also highlighted with a Q&A panel discussion with the WBBROC Mayors.  Members of the audience were given the opportunity to ask questions.

Collaboration on the Forum

This year’s forum was again a very collaborative effort between the Department of State Development, Regional Development Australia and WBBROC.  Many thanks for all the many helpers and organisers from those 3 organisations for helping to make the day a success.
Don't forget that the WBBROC website www.wbbroc.org.au also has up-to-date information about our organisation and the various sub-committees, projects and WBBROC events.
