Explaining the ‘terrifying’ trends of climate change
The Earth is warming at a pace “unprecedented in 1,000 years,” NASA scientists report, threatening to breach the global temperature limits set in the Paris climate treaty that will take effect in November.
To learn more about why the Earth is warming so fast, what research can and is being done to adapt, and opportunities for hope, for perspective, we talked with Galen McKinley, the Bryson Professor in the Nelson Institute Center for Climatic Research.

2016 has been a special year for the Nelson Institute and included three major milestones: the 100th anniversary of Gaylord Nelson’s birth, our 10th annual Earth Day Conference, and our 5th annual Jordahl Public Lands Lecture.
In honor of these milestones, we created the Centennial Circle – an honorary giving circle for all donors who make a gift to either the Earth Day Event Fund or the Jordahl Lecture Fund during the 2016 calendar year.

Nelson in DC – November 9 & 10
Nelson Institute Director, Paul Robbins, and Events & Alumni Relations Manager, Emily Reynolds, will be in Washington, DC next week to meet with alumni and friends.

Reconnecting to the earth with Milwaukee youth
Having grown up and attended school together in the Milwaukee metropolitan area, UW-Madison sophomores Katie Piel and Natalie Hogan were well aware of food security issues throughout the city, but it wasn’t until college that they learned how they could address those problems.
Last spring, Piel, an environmental studies major, was taking notes in a lecture on food system sustainability taught by Nelson Institute Professor Cathy Middlecamp when she realized she could take her lessons beyond the classroom.
