A Message from Our PrincipalRaddy Lurie

The fall seems to be rushing by! We are in November next week, wow!

Conferences are just around the corner.  Last week Ms. Berg shared some questions you can ask your teacher during your time with him/her, here they are again:
  • What can you tell me about my child’s rate and level of learning?
  • How does my child demonstrate learning expectations?
  • Do you use pre/post assessments?
  • What opportunities will my child be given to learn with other students who have similar rates and levels of learning?
  • How will you communicate the strategies used to address my child’s rate and level of learning?

Parent Night for Families of our Students of Color:
Please join a new parent group for a gathering on Monday, November 14th, from 6:30 to 8:00 in the Alameda Library. This is a time to discuss your family's experience at Alameda and help teachers and administrators better understand how to improve our school community in regards to race and equity. This is specifically for families of our students of color. Childcare will be provided in Room 115.

Fifth Grade Parents:
If you have not already, you will soon be getting the information below from your classroom teacher.  I want to reiterate how important this is so I’m including it in my News Notes this week.

One of our major goals in the fifth grade is to help foster and create independent students who can advocate for themselves in order to become better learners. To help us do this successfully this is how you can support your child:

If your child has a question about classwork or grades please have your child either send their teacher an email or talk to the teacher directly, so they learn to address their concerns independently. Please understand that in order to have your child eventually become an independent self-managing student in the future, we need to foster these self-advocacy skills now in fifth grade.

If you want to help your child, please look at your child’s planners or your classroom calendar to see what is coming up for your child. Reading the emails from your teacher will also help you understand what is going on in our classroom and what our expectations of students are.

Security & Emergency Management at Alameda

Wednesday, November 2 | 7-8 p.m.
Next week's general assembly PTA meeting will be a town hall type forum with a panel that will include representatives from our school, the District and Portland Police. The focus of this meeting will be Security & Emergency Management at Alameda and how we can best prepare for a crisis situation to ensure that staff, students, faculty, parents, and community representatives understand roles, responsibilities, and expectations.

Please bring your questions and join us from 7-8 p.m. in the school library.

All Alameda families are encouraged to attend.
PTA membership is not a requirement for attendance.

Deck your halls and support the Alameda Discovery Garden!

by Tracy Muilenburg
It may still be pumpkin season, but it's time to start planning ahead for the holidays. Our annual Poinsettia Sale to support the Alameda Discovery Garden is now underway! Deck your halls with beautiful Poinsettias!

Order forms will come home in your child's backpack or are available for download on our Poinsettia Sale page. The order deadline is Friday November 4th, and the Poinsettias will be delivered directly from the nursery on Thursday, December 1st.

If you have any questions please email garden@alamedaschool.org

Picture Retakes are Wednesday, Nov 2

Not happy with your child’s school picture? No worries, send your entire photo package back to school next Wednesday, November 2nd, with a note outlining what you didn’t like and a new photo will be taken.

Absent on picture day? Not a problem, just send your original school picture form (still available outside the office) to school with your child on Wednesday.

Please remember to let your child’s teacher know that you want retakes done. On November 2, volunteers will be going from classroom to classroom to escort students to the cafeteria to have their photo taken. If your child's teacher is unaware of your desire for a retake your child may miss out and this is the last chance to have portraits taken at school.

Any questions, please contact Sarah at
