DID YOU KNOW… that this type of deposit, known as weathering or bloom can occur on the insider or outside of a glass container?
Don’t let the pretty wreath-like appearance deceive you. The weathering process involves an ion exchange between the mobile ions in the glass and condensed water molecules from the surrounding atmosphere. Initially, hydroxides of alkali and alkaline earth elements form at the surface. This would include sodium and calcium in the hydroxide form. These hydroxides then react with carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to form carbonates. These carbonates, which occur as discrete particles of crystalline growth on the surface of the glass, scatter light and give the glass a hazy appearance.
