Turning Up the Heat!

Grantee Spotlight

GRANT: 2016 Catalytic Grant, $75,000
PROGRAM: Securing Our Future
GRANTEE: Millvale Borough Development Corporation

In 2010, the Gardens of Millvale began much like any other community garden project—with a couple of overgrown, unkempt vacant lots, a group of dedicated volunteers, and the hope of creating a community asset that would bring neighbors together. Today, the Gardens of Millvale is a sophisticated community asset that supports and activates multiple aspects of the community’s EcoDistrct Pivot Plan.

Earlier this year, we awarded $75,000 to the Millvale Borough Development Corporation to acquire a series of parcels that currently house the Gardens of Millvale and protect the community's only dedicated green space from the threat of sales pressure and future development. Our support also positioned the community to hire a Project Manager and conduct a business and strategic plan to ensure future garden productivity and sustainability.

To date, the Gardens of Millvale has almost completed the process to acquire the parcels, preventing the loss of a key building block for the Millvale community. This acquisition and project
supports the work of Millvale partners such as Farm Truck Foods, the forthcoming Food Hub and the award winning Millvale Ecodistrict Pivot Plan. Read more!
Get to Know Your Allies

Zak Thomas, Senior Program Officer -- Affordable Housing and Lending

1. What you actually do: I work for both Neighborhood Allies and Local Initiatives Support Corporation, and in those roles, I work to support our neighborhood real estate projects through grants, technical assistance, loans and other tools.  On a macro level, I work to reduce the barriers to participating in real estate projects so that resident-led organizations and small business are better equipped to have a physical stake in their community.  In short, I support Equitable Development.

2. Years at Neighborhood Allies: A little over 1 year.

3. The best thing about working at Neighborhood Allies is:  We have a dedicated, fun and diverse team and nearly every day is wildly different than the one before.

4. If you ruled the world, what would you change on day 1? I would have everyone spend a couple days a month in someone else’s shoes in a meaningful way.  I think we’d all get along better if we truly understood where others come from and what they are dealing with.

5. The neighborhood you live in/why you love it: I currently live in Mt. Lebanon and while I miss living in the city, having a great light rail system to get me downtown fast is the next best thing.  It also makes me understand why we need better and more equitable public transportation options throughout the region.

6.Family/Pets: My wife Emily is a lawyer and romance novelist and my dog Lady is the cutest 3 year old English Springer Spaniel who seems determined to stay a puppy forever and I love her for it.

7. If you could have one superpower, what would it be? I would choose to never need sleep.  There aren’t nearly enough hours in the day to do everything I would like to do.  Or to be able to transport myself and other people anywhere instantly, that might be even better.

8. Favorite Project you’ve worked on: Love My Neighbor! It’s a grant program for residents. Experts of our neighborhoods, residents, are the only ones eligible to apply for grants to do projects for their neighbors and community. And, residents make the decisions on who ultimately receive grants.

9. Dream Vacation:  Wow, that is a fun thing to think about, but I could not narrow it down from basically taking a couple years to do everything from safaris to skiing to touring ancient ruins.  I’ll definitely need to be able to forego sleep or get that transporting super power.

10. The Boss says:
We were thrilled to attract someone of Zak's caliber to our team at Neighborhood Allies. He came through our doors one year ago, as an entrepreneurial, energetic and passionate lawyer, who was clearly committed to becoming a change agent in our community. What has impressed me most was his willingness to take a risk - moving over to a world of stress and uncertainty, while trying to solve deeply entrenched problems in our community. His passion, coupled with his legal and real estate background has been a tremendous value to our neighborhoods. Zak remains excited by the challenge of furthering our mission, and we are better for having him on our winning team!

p4 Focuses on Making Equitable Development a Reality in Pittsburgh
With the central focus on equitable development, this year’s p4 conference cultivated discussion and action to ensure that as our city grows and prospers, our residents and neighborhoods do too.

A model
basedaround a central unifying framework of: People, Planet, Place and Performance, p4 is a major effort, sponsored by the City of Pittsburgh, Mayor’s Office and The Heinz Endowments, to forge a new model of urban growth and development that is innovative, inclusive and sustainable. At the second annual p4 conference, on October 18-19, 2016, while all aspects of the p4 framework were discussed, the spotlight was on economic and social equity. This focus represents a shift in thinking and a much needed and wanted spotlight being put on creating an “All-In Pittsburgh“, an initiative that Neighborhood Allies is partnering with both Mayor Peduto and Heinz, among others on. Read more.

Pittsburgh Twin Accounts are Helping Struggling Families Build Credit Vital to Financial Stability
Twin Accounts™ encourage saving by providing an incentive for families to make timely payments into a savings account. Every time a monthly payment of $25 is reported to the credit agencies, it is matched by Neighborhood Allies, providing a powerful incentive to save $300 in one year which, with the match, accumulates to $600 at the end of the year, positioning participants to build emergency savings or to invest.

Neighborhood Allies has made this incredible product available at each of our local Financial Opportunity Centers to low-wage workers working toward improving their individual and family wealth. We’re happy to report that after one year of saving, three Pittsburghers who are clients at Oakland Planning and Development Corp.’s (OPDC), JobLinks, have completed the program. But the $300 match is just icing on the cake in terms of the positive impact these individuals have experienced. Read more about one JobLinks client that was able to go from no credit score, to a score of 718 in just 12 months!
Local FOCs Celebrate Financial Goal Day by Helping Families Save for Their Future
The three area Financial Opportunity Centers celebrated National Financial Goal Day during the week of October 10, with games, prizes and incentives for families to save toward their goals.

National Financial Goal Day was established by The Financial Clinic (www.thefinancialclinic.org) which says that people who make and achieve a short-term financial goal are 4.5 times more likely to achieve a longer-term financial security outcome, such as getting out of debt or purchasing a home. Read more to see how Mon Valley Initiative, JobLinks and Northside Common Ministries celebrated Financial Goal Day.

Pittsburgh Blight Working Group Hosts Second Annual Blight Bootcamp

Blight Bootcamp is a conference designed to engage and empower City of Pittsburgh residents to fight against blight in their communities. The Pittsburgh Blight Working Group hosted the 2nd Annual Blight Bootcamp this past October with the focus of ensuring that residents have the opportunity to learn how they can lead block-by-block efforts in their own neighborhoods in making positive change happen.

This year, we took to the streets and held Blight Bootcamp in Hazelwood, kicking off the conference with a volunteer work day in conjunction with Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh and Hazelwood Initiative. The second day included a panel of blight remediation practitioners ranging from local community advocates, government officials, to nonprofit professionals, a keynote address from a regional expert and nine sessions on an array of subjects relating to blight elimination.

Did you miss Blight Bootcamp 2016? Videos of the second day's speakers and sessions can be viewed on the City's youtube channel!
