Wake/UTD PBL Calendar
Atkins High School here in Winston Salem would like to invite you to the 4th Annual Women in STEAM Conference taking place November 19th from 8:45 - 1:05.  This event will feature interactive STEAM activities, information sessions with business partners and colleges about STEM programs and job opportunities, and a panel discussion.  Please contact Monika Vasili at 336-602-5335 or mvasili@wsfcs.k12.nc.us if you have any questions.
Conference Information
Teaching Calls will provide opportunities to address topics that I’ve been seeing in supporting teachers through coaching. Teaching Calls will begin November 7th, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. (CT), 6:00 p.m. (ET). They will run every first Monday of the month unless there is a holiday. Calls will be 30 minutes long. Ten - fifteen minutes will be devoted to the topic and the remainder of time will be for your questions. These calls will be recorded and archived so you can return to them if you missed a call. Questions can be submitted by email or asked on the call.  Live questions will be given priority. The monthly newsletter will provide a glimpse into what the focus of the call will be.  Check it out below in the ”Coaching Corner” section.
For some reason it seems like developing fluency in reading has been translated into increasing the speed at which students read. This perspective is really something that impacts all content areas not just "reading teachers". Pushing students to "read faster" too soon replaces their focus on reading carefully and for understanding - something that we can’t afford to sacrifice. Inquiry-Based Learning provides increased opportunities for independent reading of material requiring a level of understanding that results in the synthesis of some product. Extended inquiry approaches, such as Problem and Project-Based Learning, leverage this even more so. Teachers should provide instruction everyday that systematically presents daily opportunities for students to learn to read words accurately for understanding (Snow, Burns, and Griffith, 1998).  

In our first IBL Teaching Call, I will discuss this further and provide some strategies to use across all grade levels. I will also answer your questions around this topic.
