Learning as Sense-Making
Using Student Ideas to Support Sense-Making
Using students ideas as resources to support ongoing classroom sense-making is a departure from the old view of surfacing and "fixing" student misconceptions. In this March 2016 article in Science Scope, What We Call Misconceptions May Be Necessary Stepping-Stones Towards Making Sense of the World the authors examine this shift in thinking and offer strategies for supporting students classroom sense-making activities.

NGSS Video: How to Read the Standards
Interested in getting an introduction in to how to read the NGSS?
Given the various stages of NGSS implementation across Washington State, Achieve released an updated version of the How to Read the Standards video.
This video explains how the NGSS are structured and describes the different components of the organizational tables in which the standards are arranged. As a supplement to the video, we have also provided an annotated figure of the standards table arrangement that is used as an example in the video.

Cubes in Space
Launch Experiments Into Space!
idoodledu, inc, in partnership with NASA Langley Research Center and the Colorado Space Grant Consortium is offering Cubes in Space™, a program providing students 11-18 years of age an opportunity to design and compete to launch an experiment into space at no cost!
This Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) based global education program, enables students to learn about space exploration utilizing innovative problem-solving, inquiry-based learning methods. By participating in this program, students and educators are provided with engaging content and activities in preparation for the design and development of an experiment to be integrated into a small cube.
This year, experiments will be launched into space via sounding rocket from NASA Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia in late June 2017 or on a high altitude balloon launched from the NASA Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Fort Sumner, New Mexico in August 2017.

Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS)
Earn College Credit
Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) is seeking high school juniors who wish to kickstart their STEM careers and earn college credit!
In WAS, students earn college credit by completing online curriculum that focuses on space travel. By completing the online program, students may earn acceptance into a week-long Summer Residency at The Museum of Flight where they will work with professional mentors to plan a mission to Mars, tour engineering facilities, and compete in hands-on engineering challenges. Teachers are also encouraged to apply as evaluators and summer residency facilitators.
Applications for the 2016-17 session of WAS are available now at museumofflight.org/WAS and due by November 4, 2016.
