*Shoshana Walter’s investigation on the armed guard industry has now led to reforms. Signed by Gov. Jerry Brown last month, the new law makes California’s oversight over the booming guard industry one of the strongest in the country.

Member blog post: Pulitzer Prize and JAWS

I spent a couple of days last fall in the basement of a library in rural Maine, picking through letters written by two sisters a century ago. I was there at the behest of the Pulitzer Prize organization, researching one of dozens of stories published this year to celebrate the prizes’ centennial.

Voting is open!

Last Friday, ballots were sent out for the 2016-2017 JAWS Board of Directors. JAWS members in good standing may vote; voting is closed to student and associate members. Anyone who renews their membership during the voting window can contact web@jaws.org for a ballot. You may also contact web@jaws.org if you believe you are a good member in standing and did not yet receive a ballot.

Voters can learn about the board nominees on the JAWS website. The new board will be announced on Sunday, Oct. 30, at the Conference and Mentoring Project in Roanoke, Va. Results will also be posted online.

‘Social Media for Journalists’ with Lisa Rossi

Earlier this month, JAWS held a social media webinar with Lisa Rossi, the storytelling coach at The Des Moines Register.
