Join us for Mykee Fowlin on November 17 at the Rosendale Theatre Collective at 7:00 PM.  Admission is free!

To varying degrees, we all wear masks. We are conditioned to hide our true selves, out of fear of being rejected and/or judged. We are taught to devalue or ignore our pain, as if its utility is better served hidden than exposed.

But what if this approach is ultimately to our detriment, not our survival? What if our authentic self is all we have, and our pain is the gift that we use to change this world? And imagine, as a foundational premise, we are raised and trained to celebrate differences, as an inclusive process, not just a tolerable one.

In his one-man presentation, ‘You Don’t Know Me Until You Know Me’, Dr. Mykee Fowlin takes the audience on an experiential journey, having them reexamine core precepts that were taught to us from as early on as 1st grade. He uses many of his gifts – humor, performance art, poetry, storytelling, psychology, theatrical monologues, and his personal journey – to create a moving experience for all who are open to this evolution.

Emotions Matter, Second Event in Fall Community Series, a Resounding Success

Over fifty parents, SUNY students, community members, and teens gathered on October 27 on the SUNY New Paltz campus to spend an evening learning about emotional intelligence.  Our presenters, Shauna Tominey and Kathryn Lee, of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, brought many years of experience working with families on developing awareness of emotions, and using tools to manage our various emotional states.

We heard much positive feedback from attendees, and were delighted to hear that the event was meaningful to all.

Natalie Merchant and Friends Benefit Concert Raises Over $20,000 for the Foundation

The Natalie Merchant and Friends Concert was a success on many levels for the Maya Gold Foundation.  The finances have not yet been settled, as we are still awaiting some invoices, but we do know that the Foundation netted over $20,000.  The funds will be used to support community educational events similar to the Fall Community Series, our scholarship program, programs for teens in New Paltz and neighboring communities and youth in Nepal.

Aside from the success regarding fundraising, the evening offered something very special.  The performers created an atmosphere of compassion, warmth and beauty.  The musicians sang songs of friendship and love.  Poetry was read from a soulful place.  The mood was elevated; it was not simply a concert; it was a community event.  This is a tribute to the extreme sensitivity and talent that all of the performers gave of themselves.  Poetry was read by: Amelia Verderosa, Emilie Aebi and Lianna Maley.  Youth singers from the New Paltz High School included: Anderson Carroll, Caleb Sheedy, Carmen Chu, Christina Rust and Klaire Branche.  Featured musicians included: Amy Helm, Daniel Littleton, Elizabeth Mitchell, Gail Ann Dorsey, Gil Sweeney, Henry Ferland, Lucia De La Calle, Rachel Loshak, Simi Stone, Storey Littleton, Uri Sharlin, Will Nusbaum, and Zachary Alford.  Natalie Merchant gave so much of herself, more than we could have hoped for.  Her unique vision of the evening, her ability to bring gifted artists together, her authenticity, incredible talent and generosity of spirit were a treasured gift to all of us.

The Studley Theatre was full to the brim, and there was even a line of people waiting for open seats!  To everyone who came out on October 22nd, we thank you!.  Thank you for supporting the work of the Maya Gold Foundation.
