Waitaki Valley School
Newsletter

26 October 2016

Tena koutou katoa, greetings.

The short week means that it is newsletter day already!  We have a number of exciting things coming up - and we'd like you to be involved in as many aspects as you can!

Firstly - good luck to our 'Waitaki Bob' Jump Jam team who are heading to Christchurch on Friday to compete early on Saturday morning in the South Island Regional Champs.  Miss B and this team of committed Year 7 & 8 students have been practising on EVERY day possible since early in Winter.  We wish them all the best.  There is also a great team of supporters heading up with them. Our Facebook page will provide you with some updates of their performance.

Waitaki Writes Book Launch: Next week we are hoping to have the 'Book Launch' for our book - Waitaki Writes.  This book is a collection of writing from each child in our school.  It has been published professionally and I'm sure that you will be impressed by the quality of the publication.  It is neat to see every child's writing in it and I'm sure that you will smile at the wide range of topics in the book.  The book also shows the development of our writers over their time in our school.  There will be 2 books put aside for each family to purchase ($10 a copy), however the remaining books will be sold on a 'first in, first served' basis.  We only have a limited number printed so I urge you to be prompt on your order.  Information will come home next week with how you can obtain them.  They will post very well to family and friends around the world - making them great Christmas presents!  At $10 each you will want to buy them for grandparents, your children, yourself, friends and other family.
The final proof is due tomorrow and then we are hoping to have the books next week.  All going to plan we will launch the book at next week's assembly (November 4th).  I will confirm this in next week's newsletter.

Celebrate Waitaki Valley!
With next week including the athletics day, development of our Charter and the pending book launch, we will be having a 3 day 'Celebration of Waitaki Valley' from Wednesday to Friday next week.  Wednesday (November 2) will be a mufti day with proceeds going to the Richie statue fundraiser.  This ties in well with our G.R.E.A.T values that we are wanting to introduce and an opportunity for our children to contribute to the wider community.  Gold Coin donation.

Jacqui Dean Visit
We were privileged to have Jacqui Dean visit us yesterday morning.  She spoke with all of the children of her role as the MP for Waitaki and how it is important for her to be a local voice in Government.  She then spoke with the Tuakana Hub students about the specifics of being an MP,  and what qualities are required to be an effective leader.  She had a strong view on the current American election!  Thank you to Liz Hayes, Jacqui's Media Liaison who gave us this opportunity.

Pool Keys: At last week's meeting the Board of Trustees decided to have two levels of hiring of our pool key for 2016/17:
Season Key:  From the beginning of the season to the end of season: $140 (includes a $20 bond that will be refunded when key is returned).
Summer Key - Pick up between 12th-16th December. Return between 30th January – 4th February 2017: $100 (includes a $40 bond that will be refunded if key is returned on time).  Jim is getting the pool ready for the season and I will have an update on a likely opening time next week.

Policy updates:  Recently the Board of Trustees have updated our policies in line with NZ School Trustees Framework.  These are sitting in our school foyer and available to view at any time.  Procedures in line with these policies are also being updated.

Athletics - Twizel - Thursday November 3rd
Thank you for getting your transport forms in last week. Michelle is busy organising the travel arrangements, and will be in touch with you if required.

Hangi
Our Whanau hui last week confirmed that we will put together and share in a hangi as the school on Friday December 2nd.  If you are able to help with this then please let us know.  We are after the following things:
  • people to help with food preparation
  • people to help with ground preparation
  • baskets to use in the firepit
  • potato sacks
  • donations of meat and vegetables
If you are  happy to donate time or items please make contact with Michelle in the office.

Charter Review and Update
Thank you to those of you who have provided feedback on the revised Charter (VIsion, Values and Strategic Goals).  We would appreciate hearing from those of you who haven't yet let us know your thoughts.  The feedback form (which is just brief) will close off this Friday (October 28th).  To view a full size of the Charter and to read the School Introduction you only need to click here  The feedback form is linked on the image below.
